    Hi,

About to set the timing on my stock 1g-gte. Should I keep it at 10 Degree's or would I get any power increases from advancing it further?

Running on 91 Pump Gas and Standard Boost, 7 PSI I think.

with 20yo motors, just note that when doing timing, the timing marks really dont apply anymore as they did when the engine was new, as the cams, valves, lifters etc are all get worn away. When doing timing you'll have to adjust it so it runs smooth.

Engine is in pretty good cond, only done 60,000k's, just wondering if it's ok to advance timing a bit further on stock IC and 92 RON.

Err, don't run it on 91 pump gas dude, use one of the 98RON fuels like BP Ultimate...

60,000ks, one owner never beached! never wound back before it left japan!

as JCMO says use 98 octane, jap fuel standard is 100ron so 91 will be making it cry.

    Hi,

Thanks, I just cant help being cheap at times

Would I be allright with 91 or is it really not reccomended, by the way dont Jap and Australian's use a different system when measuring the octane rating? Have seen this mentioned many times.

In that case when advancing the timing, what would you reccomend if I use 95 or 98 RON, with 7 PSI and stock IC.

I ran a 5 degree advance using 98 ron with my 7mgte, this was done on a dyno to check for pinging.

91 wont be alright, it would be pinging its ass off all the time.

    Hi Kedderz,

What readings did you get on the dyno with 5 degree's advance, and what gains did you get, AFR's too. Do you have any dyno sheets?

    Thanks.

This was for a 7mgte, it does not apply to you.

Dont play with timing unless its on a dyno mate, especially running 91 octane fuel.

You cant hear some detonation and it doesnt take long for it to go bang.

Yeah best not to mess around with it, and yeah I'd rather use 95 or 98.

Usually how much would the dyno operator charge you?

    Thanks.

Cant comment on WA shops, ring a few and ask, but theres hardly any benefits unless you have some control over AFR's.

Bottom line, the 1ggte in a z20 soarer is slow and will always be slow, its simply not powerful enough for a boat that big.
