I didn't say they are weak;only that they are cast. There is cast iron and there is "cast iron".. Toyota cranks are cast from good stuff, not the cheapest.

Morgo you are wrong, and sorry my friend but these are not chevy cranks, that thing of the wide vs narrow ridge mark does not apply on every manufacturer and is not a rule of thumb buddy,

I know for sure cuz i have been working with these T engines since the 80's also we use to stroke em using Y engine cranks but they fail to work cuz they wernt forged cranks so back with the T cranks we went, and there is NO WAY IN HELL a cast crank no matter how good it is can survive on a boosted 500+ hp enviroment without exploding like a fried hot dog.

If you want there is a way to find out that my grandfather showed me to find out what crank is forged and what crank is cast and this one is the resonance way, yeap and ol school way to identified cast cranks vs forged ones and is as easy as hiting the crank with a common hand wrench while having it standing on the flywheel base without touching it, and if it makes a long bell like sound is forged but if it makes a dry thump sound is cast, try it and you will be amazed of how wrong you where before buddy.

    Good luck,

Haha I wasn't exactually sure what to make of the 'tap the crank' method of identifying cast vs forged first up toyota1515...

A quick google however turns out to support you!

If you be smart you would educate yourself how things are manufactured instead repeating some internet misinformation.
But as I said;you can believe anything you want,it's all the same to me.

    Blah blah blah blah!

I never said it wasn't CAST, i said it is FORGED, and i know how cranks are manufactured,

A factory cast crank is made in a mold by pouring the molten metal into it and let it cool down in a controlled environment.

A factory forged crank is made in a mold also with molten metal pour in to it but then it is pressed to several hundred tons to bring the grains of the molten to a more denser structure making it way stronger than plain cast.

A billet crank is cut from a solid chunk of tool steel generally 4340 steel.

Now that i took you to school and give the lesson of your life in cast vs forged FOR FREE, you can go and tell your buddies a Damn Puerto Rican taught you a big lesson today on metallurgy 101, and how a crank is made and its several variations, plus another lesson on how to know when to keep your mouth shut to not make yourself look like an idiot! LOL

    LOL have a good day.

Hey guys I also last night dropped in on a reputable engine builder last night and popped the trivia question. He is a fitter and turner by trade.

I gave him no other than this - "Would it be possible to tell the difference between a cast crank and a forged crank simply by the sound they make when tapped with a bar of metal?"

His response was to think for a second before saying "Yes you would".

I asked had he heard of it before and apparently he had not. From there I asked if he knew what the difference would sound like and he said the cast one would 'tang' and the forged one would 'ring'. He proceeded to hit both a cast Australian 308 V8 crank and a forged Chev V8 crank to show the difference for me!

The internet does actually contain some accurate information at times...

Actually i never knew it was on the net i learn that trick back in the early 80's when my grand'pa taught me about it, and the rest from books and many years on technical institutes when i was a student, and most of it from the many many years in motorsports as engine builder and fabrication.
