I think you should send it to me in OZ and I will let you know whats wrong. Nah seriously carbies probably need an overhaul. Timing is not the issue if it idles fine.

Cheers, do you know of this car? I'll definatley be checking it for rust and ill go and get the carbs checked out while im up there.
haha if i could afford to send it to aus id be importing come celicas from aus to nz theres bugger all over here!
Matt.
If not too late to read and you're there with the car already.
The picture is of a 2T-G and it has the OEM 40mm Solex S5 carbs on it. If the carbs have not been touched then here are a few things to check:
Since they have no filters reach into each barrel with a finger a check the inner venturies. They should not be loose.
If you have a Plain blade screw driver and the owner is agreeable undo the jet cover, the top most single screw on each carb. Check that each jet block is tight and not wound out loose.
Other typical problems are worn or broken idle mixture screws and pump circuit that do not work well.
Loose inner ventuies will make for bad driving. Worn idle mixture screws will give bad off idle mixtures. Out of sync carbs will stuff off idle progression.
A check to see if both carbs are working in sync is to remove and replace each plug lead as the motor idles. Each lead removed and replaced should change the idle equally. If no change on one lead then that carb's idle circuit could be blocked. If both on the same carb do not change then that carb could be shut off due to poor balance.
Tell the owner of any of these problems and suggest it could be $200-$400 to fix and use it to help negotiate a price.

Cheers Rodger, I will definately check those things out. I wasnt able to view the car today as im in christchurch and we just had a 7.4 earthquake this morning, a fair bit of christchurch city and out lying towns are a bit messed up aswell as the airport so my flights were cancelled. i'll hopefuly make up to auckland in the next couple of days to check out the ta22. thanks again!

Hey I saw that on the news. What rotten luck. Hope things are ok with family and friends.

Just went and checked out the celica, had a bit of rust in the sills along the top of the windows and bottom corner of the front/rear screens (the usual places you would expect to see the rust, its a gt model wich i didnt realise. getting a free quote on the carbs tomorrow and got mates who work for a car resto company in chch so can get rust and paint done for mates rates. may try talk the price down a bit as there was more rust then was stated on the ad. but looks like it could be a go pending the carbs and warrent of fitness.
Are you going to drive it or transport it home? Safe journey.
I used to do that Nelson/Springs Junction/Christchurch run in my TA22 several decades ago. Great driving and scenery.
If its a GT its a good score. Power windows?
Its got manual winders, its all badged up as a gt and looks to have the gt interior, wouldnt be easy to get gt badges ect over here in nz. Is there anyway of telling for sure if its gt? I'll be driving it back down, take it for an inspection tomorrow after i get the carbs done. I feel better about the rust having mates who work at a car restorers and are keen to do cashies and the guy whose going to do the wof inspection is a mate of a mate who said as long as the chassis arent rusted and breaks ect are all legit then the rust in the sills wont be to much of an issue if im getting it repaired when i get it back down to chch. hopefully it will be a go. Putting the work into it doesnt put me off as its just body prep/paint. no conversions on the books so its not to daunting lol
