Default 1jz problems with idle and snapped off screw head.

    Hi all,

O.K. so I went remove my coil packs to get to the plugs for their well overdue change and I have managed to snap the screws off as shown in the picture below:

Am I totally rooted here? Or can they be removed. Are these screws imbedded in the head or is it another part that can be removed so they can be drilled out or something? I'm such a retard. Also as you can see there is a lot of oil and sludge down there, I'm going to be replacing the rocker cover gasket, is it safe to clean this area with degreaser?

The reason for the plug change is idle problems. The car will idle properly from cold but after a bit of driving the idle will drop to around 400-500 rpm and then stall. Turn the car back on and it will idle around 500 rpm, then a bit more driving and the same thing. I have cleaned the idle control valve and their was no change. Could this be fouled plugs? or maybe fuel pump (400 rwhp on stock soarer pump). Any other ideas?

    not a happy 1jz..

And just one more thing, I was after spark plug recommendations and a good gapping for my setup. It's running 2j injectors with stock ecu and SAFC II with up to 20 psi running through it. I've been told to run NGK V power plugs with a 0.80mm gapping.

Looks like they're in the head, but don't panic, they are repairable. An engine reconditioner or engineer or most mechanics will be able to fix it in place, but make sure whoever you use is good, they've pretty much got 1 shot to drill them straight, so it very much "fck it or fix it" time.

As for the idle, it sounds like the fuel pump ecu. Try bridging the pump through the diagnostic connector on the inlet manifold, FP to IG termianals from memory.

i did exactly this just the other day, there was a tiny bit of thread sticking out and was able to get a centre punch and knock the thread out a bit longer then got some needle nose pliars and twisted the rest out

cause i change the plugs quite regularly they are always in and out, got 6 new ones for $7 from toyota

Yeah sorry i just had a mental blank. How would using a center punch help? I use a flat head screw driver on the first, hammered it in to create a grove for the screw driver to grip, but the other one is just gay.

i don't think you've got enough thread or enough room for the centre punch method, you'll probly swing and miss with the hammer too, and put a nice hole in your cam cover

you'll need to drill a hole in the centre of the bolt and use an ezy-out to twist it out.

just use a good quality ezy out or you may snap the ezy out in there as well , then you will have a headache.

he'll have a big headache! if you feel the ezy out twisting or flexing, stop using it immediately! unless you wanna MAJOR PITA.

i had just enough metal to hit the centre punch against the thread, so it basicly just twisted its way out then when it was high enough some needle nose vice grips did the rest

was out in 5 minutes but yea depends how much metal you have sticking out

The safest thing to do straight up is to drill it out and fit a helicoil.

Ive seen enough good quality ezyouts snap too, if you are gonna go down that route be very careful, as joecoolmk2 suggests, if you feel any flexing in the easyout stop before you snap it, the bolt is obviously locked in there too much, then go the helicoil way.

the only problem with the helicoil is there'd be hardly any material to work with. also, they're expensive for one or two bolts. i suggest you get the broken bolt out, but be carful not to snap off the ezy out.

be very careful with the ezy out as others have said. I got the good quality ones last time I needed them and they snapped. I really think the name is false advertising.

yes, it's a fine balance between too small and too bigger ezy out. with this bolt, it's M6x1, so i'd recommend using a 3 mm drill for the hole.
