Whats 0-100km/h on the 18rg? roughly

Depends on what car you have it in, the engine (ie what version and what mods) and how you drive.
FWIW, using a handheld stopwatch (passenger that is) my old 2.2L 18-rg, ra23 (40mm webers, 40 thou over pistons, extractors etc) about 7.5 seconds, so not as good as this calculator would have you believe.
I refuse to believe my driving was the weak link.

Okay so I've been enjoying my celica too much recently, actually driving it around including regular trips to work and back, so apparently I'm over due for some bad luck. The 18RG has been running nice, apart from the slow lumpy idle that is slowly shaking the first muffler apart. So yesterday I get home and think I'll up the idle a little to smooth it out before the guts of the first muffler end up out the back of the exhaust. When I pop the bonnet I notice combined with the noise of the mufflers internals rattling and the exhaust hitting something under the car a nasty knocking sound coming from the front of the engine. I had been hearing this knocking while sitting idling but had assumed (the mother of all F/ups) that it was just the exhaust hitting whatever it has been hitting under the car. From the brief amount of time I had to poke around I determined the noise to be somewhere at the front of the engine possibly behind the timing chain cover. Anyone have any thoughts on what might be causing this? I'm hoping it's as simple as a loose chain guide but I'm beginning to fear much worse.

Hi,
could be a few things and depends on the rattle. Could be worn/stretched chain, could be low oil pressure not tensioning the chain properly (which could just be using the wrong oil for the conditions) you may have a worn chain pad or even broken/missing. And this could be on either of the chains too. You may just need to adjust the upper chain tensioner as well. Check the green bible for the specs and how to do it.

Chains is the easy one to blame. If the rattle disappears when you rev up a touch, then try tightening the upper tensioner just a small amount. If the rattle improves from this, then keep going until it stops, or reduces to an acceptable level.

OOOOh on the subject of chains
since TRD/HKS gear drives are non exsistant and the few people who have them are not willing to give them up for the purpose of making copies I HAVE AN IDEA that should work in theory
this is a pic of the HKS GD for a 2tg the TRD one for 18rg looks similar
now just to add both these systems 2tg + 18rg drive an AUX shaft of the crank at 1/4 speed to run a dizzy
so other than crank and aux shaft diameters is there any reason one could NOT convert this 2tg gear drive to run on an 18RG
said gear drive

and the next bit seems easy enough
make one of these
from one of these or similar

anyone on here TOY-ed with the idea
Unfortunately it's not really what I remember timing chain rattle to be. It's definately more of a knock. I've parked her for the moment until I can investigate more. The one thing I did do was pull the #1 plug lead to see if the knock went away. It didn't. However the engine also didn't miss a beat. I then reinstalled #1 plug lead and pulled #2. The engine died almost straight away. At this point I went away concerned and curious. Concerned #1 cylinder is rooted and curious as to whether I have only ever experienced 75% of the awsomeness of the 18RG.
Next step is to get an appropriate attachment for the compression tester and begin investigating.

hI,
next step is check oil for water and water for oil....... Can you get some video/audio for us to see/hear?

number one bearing is decieding to go back to its basic elementsthey dont just do this under hard cornering and acc. and oil pump cavitation they do this when your oil galleries gunck up and cant provide enough lube to pot 1 and occasionally 2 but mostly number 1 thats just from personal experience for us on several motors nearly always number one bearing that failed through oil starvation issues
I'm actually in the process of installing an idiot light to complement the standard oil pressure gauge. Received the globe holder to fit into the dash the end of last week. Oil pressure has always been at the top end although the standard pressure sensors are always slow to respond to change. If it is a bearing, might have to try and flush the oil system and make sure oil is getting everywhere it should be. And maybe invest in an extra high volume pump to maintain the pressure at idle.
Glen.
an accusump setup will going in on my 18RG
when you find an of the shelf oil pump solution let us all know 100s of people are after them LOL
I've posted a thread up asking for some advice about an 18r-g + 18r-c options
If anybody can offer some info the thread is here
