G'day all wondering if anyone can help out?

I'm helpin a mate put a webbered 18RGEU into his Hilux to replace the 18RC

Now this engine has no fuel pump.

I need to know if the 18R or RC one will bolt on.

As the pic shows the fuel pump hole is plated off (well it doesn't actually show that but theres a lil plate bolted over where it goes on the 18RC

A few more pics of the engine

As you can see its got scorcher elec ignition, twin webbers and a nice blue paint job.

    Can anyone advise??

    Cheers, Jon

    hi jon
if you need a hilux sump and extractors i have them here , the sump
has an oil return line as it was on a turbo engine, easily blanked off though
i am not sure but there may be a difference in the 18rgue motor as it was designed for
fuel injection , and it may not have the drive cam in there for the mechanical pump
you can always take the plate off and have a look in there as it should be visible
as to if its there or not , others far more knowledgeable may be able to confirm this

    Thanks Ian

I had a look, unfortunately there's nothin but empty space behind the plate

Thats a bugger, we bought this engine as an 18RG and this turned up.

Now fuelling will have to be taken care of, gotta love engine swaps, always much more trouble than you plan for!!!

Does any one know an easy way to intall enough of a fuel system to get this thing going?

I have a carby fed Nissan 720 that runs an elec fuel pump, we might have to cannibalise that onto the hilux or something but it should provide right pressure and we can take the whole lot off the 720.

Or is there an easier way?

i run a aftermarket elect fuel pump.. it only pushes 4psi or something little like that, and it is quite simply cut in to the fuel line and works a treat...

So heres the pump on my 720

Then I just take the fuel line, cut it, insert that pump and I should be away?

    THat sounds freakin sweet!

    That's an ugly looking pump.

Rule 1 - have a low pressure filter before the fuel pump.
Rule 2 - make sure when you switch the ignition off, the pump turns off - don't rely upon a manual switch.

I would personally be on the look out for something like a Pierburg external lift pump. Mine cost $200 local price new, but you should be able to find something on the net cheaper. It is an axial pump, not a diaphragm pump, so no clack clack everywhere you go.

i used solid state electric ones on the race boat
no problem there , i even fitted extra ones as transfer pumps for the fuel tanks
tey are still working after 12 years, as good as new
and the best part is that they are not expensive about $65 EACH

Would there be any problems in using an 18RC sump on an 18RG? My engine builder thinks that the 18rg one is factory baffled and the 18rc one is not... true or false?

    Hi,

I didn't think the 18R-G sump is baffled. Custom baffling is done on them if used for track work, but for daily duties it isn't needed.

I'm running a 16R Sump on an 18RGU. I inspected them both when I swapped them over and I couldn't see any internal diffeerences.

The only reason I swapped them was I wanted to retain my car's factory oil level sensor.

Cool. Sounds like its time to rip the 18rc out of project celica and sacrifice it for parts

Cheers for the help guys, we want to run the pump from the ignition 4 sure, too easy to have an accident otherwise

That pump is a sight 4 sore eyes indeed!!!!

Will prob use it to get the engine going as it comes with a nice protective guard and will keep it all safe and then get a new one that will bolt into the cradle in the housing.

Doesn't the rg sump have the flat piece of sheet metal on the top. Thus the baffled name.
Even though its not fully baffled, i would think it is better than the 18r sump, which is fully open

Unless you have some freakish set up.
the 18geu and rg have the same clutch, both using a w50 gearbox.
Best way to check if w50 gearbox, compared to w57/8 is but looking at the centre of the gearbox. W50 has steel casing and w57/8 has an alloy casing.
From record a 18rc clutch will suit, just get the best type you can afford.
