I'm back, I've bought a ksev, thinking of putting an 18rg in.
I have access to an 18rg converted motor (rebuilt rc with ge pistons, head and all the timing shit etc) for $200, but it has no carbs.

So if anyone has an rg for sale with carbs (and with a gearbox too?) would be great.

Why the hell waste money for some fancy head/mains studs or bolts!!?
They are SOOO robust to start with!

Please show me a one example of failed head/mains bolts (that is reliably proved being fastener failure;not poor installation or other failure)!

Also there is no need anything but stock flywheel bolts;they just needed to torqued as tight as you dare.Only time I shear the FW bolts was when I used tork wrenc and put them factory specks.. After that I just use bolt gun and hit them hard!
8000 rpm launch with gumball tyres no problem (and about 1 bar boost off line)

    But it's your money..

Yes, but I assume your stock bolts would be dead long before those ARP ones =P

ORLY, my turbo would stretch the head bolts every time running 24psi. Put in new set and they would last for a few thousand km and stretch again. Stock HG would look mint once disassembled but you could see where combustion gases were passing into the coolant galleries.

Everything else appeared bullet proof as you say, but if i ever did another turbo RG i'd be using head studs (and MHG) of some sort if chasing big boost.

    yeah... no thanks.

if im spending multiple thousands of dollars on pistons and rods and engine build, i dont want it all to be let down by chosing not to fit a simple part that costs <$5ea.
Especially when i'll be pumping in around 20psi and many horses.

I'll take the security of the ARP fasteners thanks.

Mate... i wouldnt recommend doing the 18RG into KE70, unless you are a sucker for punishment.
    Its not an easy conversion.

I'm a fitter and machinist by trade so I'm not scared of a bit of fab work.

I want to stick with carbs for it and getting a 4a+carbs is wwaaayy more expensive and rare then 18rg (here at least)

Morgo, after 30+ years of stretching, corrosion and shear forces, the stock fasteners are best used as scrap metal. Since Toyota locally don't list 18rg parts, it is easiest just to get ARP units and mod to suit.

To be legal you will have to ensure you have a KE70 built before 10/82, and use an 18RGEU.
10/82 is the latest i can find solid envidence for production of the 18RG in any form, in the RT141-TSMQF Corona 2000GT model.

... and why would you honestly want a carb motor?
    Carbs are teh ghey.

If i were to build me a new NA 18rg - it would be with some EFI quad throttles. Fek the carbies.

Witzy, did you check the RA63 Celica? I believe they were 18RGUE.

Just finally managed to get my 18RG running right tonight thanks to a colortune. I have nobody around to teach me and really wanted to do it myself. After messing around for days trying to get it to stop popping out of both ends i have it running smooth and idling sweet- in 45 minutes.

Seriously if you dont know much about carbs and want to have a go at tuning the colortune pretty much instantly teaches you what to listen for and, most importantly, gives you a point of reference for each cylinder. Then by getting your idle right the rest of the rev range comes alive. Going to have a play with jets eventually but i am ecstatic with where it is now.

anyways - 18RGs are one sexy sounding motor, the induction noise through the firewall of the twin carbs is sensational.

What do you guys think of these jets for 18rgeu head, 88251 cams, ~9:1cr
    Main air: 190
    fuel: 140
    Idle: 62.5
    Pump:50
Seems to drive pretty sweet for a "dont know what I'm doing" home tune and idles like a dream.

It hits a wall at ~6.5k rpm and I am 99% sure it is ignition. Using a RC dizzy with points, old rotor cap and a potentially 15+yo coil. These are next on my list to upgrade.

I second that. I've messed around with webers for hours trying to tweek the idle and still not been happy. When i found the colourtune on a mini website i was like "this sounds dodgy or must be hard to use" I ordered one anyway and fudge me if it isn't easy as piss. Screw it in, fire up engine, adjust to correct mix, cylinder done, move to the next. Saved me heaps of frustration when trying to find the right idle jets and sort a progression issue.
