JCMO: Yeah i was thinking about the turbosmart e-boost its about $700 retail fitted isnt it? I know its not the cheapest but it can do just about everything ive heard? How much more well would the results be on my stock twins running 1 bar as opposed to just a cheap boost tap? (powerwise) and is it possible for me to be able to make it go on boost a bit quicker? Because as you will know it has a bit of lag at the moment, so i would like to try and improve on that a bit if its possible?

Was a while ago when I bought mine. Most retailed it for more than $700 for the unit alone. I paid $650 and fitted it myself, pretty easy.
It brings on boost faster, but also minimises the spike and can force the turbos to hold peak boost for longer.

Out of curiosity, how can any boost controller bring on boost quicker?
I would expect even the best controllers can only control boost after the wastegate opens, so unless the gate is being opened too early (like before the turbo has spooled up) then there's nothing you can go with the contol to spool up quicker.
I can see how it would avoid spikes (assuming the vaccum/boost lines aren't spaghetti'd everywhere) and also allow a higher peak boost by bleeding, but I can't understand how it can bring on boost quicker
But I'd love to know how

The wastegate in an ideal world would only open when it got to the preset point, but poor design and/or age allow it to creep open prematurely. Because the boost controller actually sits between the compressor and the wastegate, it can actually block all the air to the wastegate. Eliminating the creep is how they bring it on faster.

And is that creep at low RPM actually noticable on a good condition engine? Or only on old junkers?
As the wastegate solenoid gets older it would actually take more boost to open it, so it must be losing the tension of the wastegate spring over time that allows it to open early?

Depends on the wastegate, all will have it to some point. The further you move boost pressure from the spring pressure the worse it gets too, which is the beauty of an EBC.

Effectively you are making the wastage more like a switch than a valve
A good gate solenoid *should* act like a switch, but doesn't seem to.

All wastegates open over a range of pressure and so its normal function for them to creep long before you get to the desired boost level. A good EBC prevents that as already explained. The concept that a Wastegate actuator works like a switch at a given boost is just not realistic.

with all those things i said i have done to the engine since my last run + also a 3inch exhaust and ebc running 1bar?
I would be happy with around 140kws?

No, all wastegates have a seat pressure or spring load holding them closed. and another pressure where they are fully open. Inbetween is where the gate starts to creep open. Depending on the type of controller, you can minimise this difference.

If you have a Gen3 1GGTE, then yes, thats a reasonable figure.

No its a Gen2 1986model.
Say 130kws would be more realistic to expect then?

Yeah, should get that easy. It's just better to hope for the low side and be happy when it beats it

Just an interest question here, how often do you guys check and adjust the timing belt tension on your 1G's?
