Hey guys im just about to reassemble my 18rgeu but i noticed the Oil pump has a few scores around the outside of it. Nothing too serious but im not 100% confident its a good idea to put it back in. I have two 18r oil pumps but they are smaller and i dont know if its a good idea running these with the twin cam head. I have thought about just putting the rotor in the lathe and giving it a bit of a polish up. This is going to reduce the diameter ever so slightly though so i dunno if its a good idea.
Has anyone got any opinions on whether an 18r oil pump in an 18rgeu is a bad idea or vice versa?

You can use a good 18rc pump housing if you have the spacer plate type and swap over the larger pump inards. You can sometimes find new 18r pumps on eBay which I buy up to make sure I always have a spare housing.

As Willofan says, housings are the same, only internals are different. There are at least two different pickup designs though.

If the outer ring (rotor) is scored on the outside, just check that no little bits of metal are stuck into it or into the housing then put it back together.

If it is scored on the inside, do the same and keep an eye out for a better one or wait for the guy from the states to start making new ones.

Nah its only the outer of the round piece that is scored the inside looks fine. I think itt just give it a polish up in the lathe and if i find the clearance is excessive then i might just have to machine it down a bit and put a sleeve on it. Or sleeve the inside of the housing. In saying that like willo fan said i am going to have to use the 18r pick up as its its the right sump configuration for me so could use the good 18r housing with spacer plate and just a polished up outer rotor.
Yes the oil pump dilemma. I could get them wire cut here in NZ for not a hole lot its just getting a drawing done exactly right then modelling it all to check clearances throughout the pumps entire rotation that is the hard bit.

    Hi,

Never had an issue with oil pump or oil pressure in 30+ years of 18R-G ownership, and the 18R-GTE I now have runs the stock oil pump and no probs with pressure or anything like that also (mind you, it is configured with a cut-off if oil pressue drops 'cos I dont want to ruin an expensive engine). If I was going to do track work and throw the car about then I'd maybe upgrade the pump, but certainly put in sump baffles - or better still go for a dry sump arrangment.

But, for daily driving and the odd spirited cruise the stock oil pump is more than adequate.

Hey 18rg gurus! wondering if someone has had a similer problem to what im having with my 18rg at the moment, spent saturday morning changing my fuel lines to Aeroflow fittings, cleaned the car, and started driving to harry's cafe in liverpool, stopped for petrol, drove out the servo, then suddenly the car wouldnt idle at all. had to give it heaps of throttle to keep it from stalling, after that wouldnt start again even with start ya bastard, first thought was bad fuel, had a look at it, and it was totally spotless.cleaned all the jets, which weent overly dirty, still no good, checked spark which was good and strong, cleaned the plugs, which were pretty carboned up but not so bad. after which it started up just, but sounds like a rotary and pours fuel out the exhaust, barely running, it still feels good under load, but off throttle or idling it wont idle or run properly, shaking like nothing else. any thoughts? timing is good, spark is strong, lots of clean fuel getting to the carbs, and the jets are nice and clean...

    Hi,

Sounds like and air leak somewhere.

Get some carby cleaner and spray around the inlet manifold and carbies (but not in them) and if the revs pick up and she idles properly then that area is where the air leak is. Spray the connections on the fuel lines which you replaced and check for fuel leaks around them also, as it appears all was okay until you changed them over.

Wouldn't think so as 18RG's were never released into Hiluxes and 1977 Celica's didn't have pollution motors.

spose it would depend for full engineering if the person knows what to look at the will go by the head number casting if had it it will need it

but we done heaps of 18r swaps in the day got the new eng numbers assoc. with rego then put twincam heads on on with no smog control
