hey all, ive got a weird litte problem, my turbo has been fubar'd for a while..actually its not that bad' still spools nicely and boosts fairly well, the oil seals are just gone..anyway long story short, at some point a few weeks ago, my gen 1 3sgte went from getting around 10ks a litre down to around 5-6 ks a litre in an instant, it didnt gradually happen...one tank saw me 420ks then the next tank saw me around 230aswell as this my idle has dropped around 400 rpm, there are no power losses or any other symptoms other than the low idle and dog shit economy, has any1 go any ideas as to where to start looking?

i dont even know why i mention the turbo as it has been steadily declining for 3 months or so, and in the last few tanks of fuel it has actually been making alot more power under boost than usual and the turb is spooling a fair bit easier....i dunno im tired and stressed and rambelling
Air leak? Can you hear the turbo more than normal? perhaps even hear the wastgate a bit?
could it be your o2 sensor, has it been blowing alot of smoke latley.. i know you say your turbo seals which was cause it to smoke,but maybe is not the turbo!

his car dose blow a bit of smoke but is when he lets it idle for say about 1 or 2 min in the same place then when he takes of a little but constant line of smoke comes out of his exhust and dv and I are pretty sure that it is the seals in the turbo which are gone

um i think it was a whiteish grey smoke i wasn't really paying attention to it sorry

white at idsle is normally turbo seals as you say! The only thing i can think of is o2 and its running very very rich. It might be worth seeing if the ecu spits out any error codes!

hey all just got a chance to get on here, im pretty confident its a buggered 02 sensor, the turbo has been an issue for a while so it doesnt really explain the snap from great economy to shithouse economy in one tankload, as for error codes it doesnt spit anything out of the ordinary out, it smokes no more than usual, ie nothing on normal drivig...a puff of black when you snap second, and as piggy said it starts blowing a little bit of oil when it has been idleing for around 4-5 minutes, but that clears up after 30 seconds of driving. i stuck a bottle of injector cleaner through the last tank and that upped my economy to around normal for that tank load, but this next tank is back to only 120ks on the half mark :S, squid mine and piggys turbos are always BS loud..damn noisy ct26's. but anyway im really leaning towards the o2 sensor just shat itself, explains why one minute im getting 10ks to the litre and the next im getting little over 6 lol
similar prob here, although not quite as bad ... orderd a new o2 sensor after doing the CEL diagnose, and all is good again ...
ACA do the o2 sensor, its listed for the GT4 not the mr2 (if its a single wire version) and is about $70 from auto one.

just thaught i'd update, a new oxy sensor has cleared everything up and baught my economy back to normal
well just to clear up why the oxy sensor died, it would more then likely be beacuse of the oil coming from the turbo seals which fouled the oxy sensor.

could be,or it could be koz its 19 years old and approaching 200k ks, or it could also be because i have a tendancy to run metho in my fuel which i believe kills oxy sensors...either way the turbo is on my list of "to replace with high performance parts" list...only earing $8 an hour means i cant just buy a new garrett koz i fouled an oxy sensor koz my turbo is dieing![]()
I had a similar problem with the o2 sensor, don't do what I did, fix one thing at a time.
did you get it from Auto One?

yeah man it cost me $90 it was actually made by one of NGKs sub companies..NTK i think it was...its alot smaller than the stock unit too.
