Jeez, I didn't know the boxes were THAT strong!

But the reason I liked either the MR2 or modifed GT4 box is because of the driveshafts. I could be wrong, as I have not looked, but I would expect the CV's and driveshafts to be a lot stronger on the 3S style driveshafts.

When I was looking at it for Emma's Levin, I was going to run the AWD GT4 box (with rear tailshaft disabled) to keep the AWD potential open, and see if the GT4 front driveshafts/hubs brakes etc. could be made to fit.

But I guess you could fit up the E58 to the 3S and make custom driveshafts with HD CV's, which would also work and sounds a bit easier.

Also shouldn't need custom CV's (the e58 LSD shafts are quite heavy duty already) measuring in at 30mm thick from the factory.

I guess it would come down to what terra proffers, and if he wants to use the levins gearbox or not.

I believe he's building a frankenbox at the moment with E51 gearbox parts thrown in a e58 box, the E51's gears are thicker, so i think that will just add the to the already terminator strong box.

Do the GTZ CV's tend to have any issues?

nope, apart from hard to find if you don't know where to look..

terra would have no problem finding a second set.

why not just pull the bellhousing off a GT4 celica E5X (can't remember the code)... and put it onto your E51/2/8 hybrid...

that is essentially what an MR2 turbo box is, with the selector's around the other way (which you just turn around)

i covered this in a different thread.. there the same gearbox (essentially like the W55/6/7/8).. whith adaptor/extension housings for FF / AWD... it's a simple blanking plate.. in 2WD..

370Kw capability is good news for the E58. Drive shafts are easy to rebuild and the only problem I've found stems from excessive lowering on original CV's.......

The gearbox I am building is as follows:

    E58 housing
    E51 5th gear (taller than the E58)
E52 Gear sets (apparently 30% thicker than the E58 gear sets and the same ratios)
E51 5th alloy 5th gear housing (in place of the pressed tin E58 housing)
    Quaife ATB diff

So it should be somewhat tough??

Will the E5x bellhousing bolt straight up to the E58 box no worries? How hard is something like that to find? If it's easy to find and will directly bolt up, that sounds to be the best option. I plan to use a Quaife ATB diff too, just to make sure it's tough.

I plan to just crack 300Kw ATW, any more will be unusable in a front wheel drive. The main thing I'm worried about is the big torque I'll be pushing through the gearbox from the supercharger in low gear. (unless my understanding of this stuff is incorrect???)

use an SW20 E153 gearbox as the starting point for your build. Use your GZE FWD selectors etc on that with whatever internals you want.

you can't simply 'swap' the bellhousing, the box is built from the bellhousing side of the trans case back.

This will also give you the correct 3S starter position in the bellhousing and you're best using an MR2 turbo flywheel too.

Ah, true. The bellhousings don't come off like a RWD.... How easy are the E153 boxes to acquire? Can I use the GZE starter in that box?

I'll see if I have any photos from when we did the clutch change in my brothers SW20 turbo, GZE starter wont work, need the 3S starter.

I wouldn't even consider machining up an adapter to mate an 'A' block e-series box to an 'S' block, using the factory toyota parts designed for the job is always the better option.

A couple of americans have done things the really hard way to adapt the E153 to the ZZ motors, they dismantled the trans, milled off a section of the front of the bellhousing, then welded on a new alloy ring with the ZZ bolt holes in the right spot and a new starter ear for the ZZ starter. For those guys it would have been a lot easier starting with an actual GZE box. Info on what they did to adapt it is here: http://www.monkeytuner.com/forum/vie...php?f=4&t=1969

Pics would be awesome. I think the S series gearbox is the way to go. Will the series gearbox internals fit for sure?

Ask Terry from Road and Track, there are a few minor variations from year to year but he's pulled them all apart and built hybrids etc. http://www.roadandtrack.net.au/image.../E_Gearbox.pdf
