Maybe find out where its leaking they have seals which can be replaced and then maybe get a quote on that from another aircon guy. Otherwise maybe go secondhand but make sure you get at least 3 mths warranty.
OK I have a quote sitting in front of me to get a replacement compressor for the 92 soarer at $1145 as the current one is leaking.
As i could probably buy a whole engine for that on a lucky day, i am looking at what other options might be available to me.
is it possible to get them reconditioned?
is there a reasonable source where i could find them cheaper?
is there anything i can do myself to replace or fix the existing one (is there any method for removal/installation i should be aware of) so that i can just take it back to any aircon place after doing whatever needed to be done to it and then regassing it?
cheers

Hi,
Most Second Hand Compressors will have leaky shaft seals.
Your best bet is to get yours rebuilt. Cost is about $300 to $400 for a rebuild.
Get in contact with Orion Compressors or All Auto Compressors they can rebuild it for you.
Just get the gas evacuated, then undo the lines on the compressor. Put tape on the lines so dirt does not get into them.
Send the compressor for a rebuild. When you get it back put it back in and use New o-rings. Also replace the receiver/drier as the system has been opened up. Get a vacuum and regas done.
Why do you say "Apparently" On your thread? Are you not sure it's leaking or just think it's leaking from there?
inherrent trust for a mechanic I guess. (i don't know how to check myself, therefore i am relying on someone else's word...hence 'apparently')Originally Posted by z2tt
Most refrigerants have a U/V Dye added. If your refrigerant has a UV Dye, Get a UV Light and get under the car, shine it at the bottom of the compressor, if you see any traces of green then that is a leak.
also if you are doing it youself then please go to a re-gassing place first and have them evacuate the old gas so it doesnt go into the atmosphere
if you go back to the same place for a re-gassing then they will take the price of the de-gassing off the bill.
also i would ask your mechanic to be a bit more specific on the leak, because i dont think that air cons will retain any gas for more than a few hours if there is even the slightest leak in the system.
MX83 2JZ-GTE!!
#YOLO.
I had 5 Large leaks in my system, it lasted for 2 weeks.
All Car A/C Systems leak very slowly, the gas gets through the rubber hose at a molecular level, that is why all cars need regassing at some point, whether it be several years or every year if the car has developed a larger leak.
