Default Why are BOV's so Expensive?

    Hello,

I just dont understand why some Blow off valves are so expensive, upwards of $600 for a metal enclosure with a Spring inside. When there are BOV's like this for $80 off Ebay :

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/GENUINE-MARS-...QQcmdZViewItem

And ones like this for $60

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/MARS-MP-BL001...QQcmdZViewItem

What must be so good about a $600 BOV thats not so good about a $80 BOV.

Can somebody please help me understand, or is it just companies wanting to rip people off with fancy shiny coloured BOV's ?

    because there is a market....

and because there is a difference in materials... fo rth ebody, the piston, the diapghragm, and the design.

the $600 one may not be worth $600, but the $60 one sure as heck didn7t cost $60 to produce

Thanks yeah i should take that into consideration.
Is there any BOV's around the price range of $100 that are good quality?

I am keen to buy one of the $60 ebay BOVs just for the hell of it to see if they are good.

i bought a relatively expensive one, 250 or so from memory, atmo venting.
it was a stealth one. ie, came painted black from factory and had no trumpet.
    was a turbo smart.
that used to jam shut on cold morning til you got a heap of boost up its clacker, which always annoyed me. dunno if mine was a one off, or if the cheap ones are even worse?...

    cheers, andrew

oh, and ae86s are expensive because theyre in a cartoon and have a 'cult' following.
ie, theres a market there thats willing to pay highly inflated prices for something that doesnt credit that sort of money...

    cheers, andrew

How much boost are you running? An oem style bosch one might get you out of trouble.

I'm not yet convinced that all Ebay cheapo stuff is shit. I used to think that when looking for manual boost controllers. some were priced upward of $150, then there was a cheap ebay turbotech brand one for $30, which happened to have real good feedback from forums such as skylines Australia.

So I wonder if there are any cheap good BOV's, as these are the most heavily priced items that come from big manufacturers.

but.. manual boost controllers are just a simple valve.. a $5 part if you don't buy it with a "boost controller" title.

oh wait.... i thougth we were talking about wastegates.. my bad.........
there is no reason BOV's should be $600, that is pure wankfest

some of the cheapies will be fine, but it depends how well they have been made. you may or may not be able to "remanufacture" them.. ie, tip out the metal shavings, make sure dimensions are correct etc..

could always use an OEM one.

ie 1jz or 2jz. you can pick them up for next to nothing. they look stealth too

late model 2jz has a pipe inlet and outlet

Theyre expensive because theyre marketed to a huge audience through ad's in magazines, sponsorship of drag cars, and because your paying money for a brand name, all of which costs more money than the same thing minus all the hype.

eg. Turbosmart: A well known, reputable, global company, who sponsors a 6sec rotary and a whole bunch of other things. Your paying $40 for the part, and $560 for the attractive stuff.

Much like your boyfriends fave Gucci bag not being worth $500

there is also a warranty, availability of spares and testing for that turbosmart thing

it might cost $40 to make but how much time was spent developing it?

your paying extra for the quality, engineering and sometimes bling (anodizing dose cost a fair bit), frankly if you get a cheep one it could get ceased, blocking the only escape for for excess boost, causing over boost, resulting in major damage or it leaks,
