You can get masks (I use a twin filter item) which are suited to spray painting, but have a warning indicating they are not suitable for 2pak that contains free organics. These are suitable for iso-free 2k paint. It is then a normal epoxy, with normal harmful chemicals. Just make sure you also use a pre-filter, and change them regularly.

Just something i noticed with POR15 is that it fades in the sun light so not idea for any top coats. Im going to tackle my engine bay this weekend. Im in NZ temperature is around 12-15 degrees at the mo. I am going to use a 2pak straight black. Do I need a heater for my garage? Befofe and after painting?

I suggested this to a guy here in Canberra, and it worked well. Rent/buy a gas blower heater, aim it at the garage floor, and get the floor warm, that way the heat will be radiated from the floor after you turn off the gas burner. Flash over fire will result if you try to spray with the heater going. Being 2pak it cure is by catalytic reaction, not evaporation of the thinners. Use a fast hardener in low temperatues.

A 2pak clear coat over the POR15 might solve the fadeing, or is the POR something you have applied in low temperature?

    cheers Chuck.

POR can be applied at any temperature, as it cures on moisture, not heat. So it will cure faster in high humidity than in low humidity.

The instructions and all blurbs do say that POR isn't UV stable too... but they do have a clear version. Not sure how it goes for yellowing??

is POR15 even for Automotive use? Or do people just like it because of it's rust protective qualities?

Would it be good to use this as like an undercoat for rust protection when restoring cars?

Haha i have used it as a top coat in some applications but only in small areas where there was rust i just prepped the metal and painted it on and 3 years later its still fine. Just faded now but no rust has ever come back.

Cheers for the advice Z ute i definately wasnt thinkin of keeping it running unless i want a crispy burnt finish to my paint job/face

Yeah, ive used POR15 for automotive stuff too, works well.

Any ideas on how Turps based enamel would hold up in say an engine bay? Ive got a bunch left over from doing the cupboards in the kitchen and was thinking of quickly respraying the engine bay in the AE86 to make it all nice and glossy.

POR has a UV cut topcoat tat can be applied over normal POR...

tak, you could paint a couple of strips, ait till they harden, then dunk them in petrol/oil/brakefluid for a wek and see what happens

Takai, why bother, you can buy 4 litres of polyurethane 2pak for $100.00, plus the hardener. The polyurethane is what semi trailer prime movers are painted with, takes a crap load of punishment.

I repainted my garden shed with turps based enamel, it has gone all chalky.

According to the website, it is a product that changed the car restoration industry. So I would say that it was designed for the purpose of protecting against rust, and the natural progression toward automotive uses just occurred.

This can be used as an undercoat for rust protection along a whole car, though it would be quite expensive, and labour intensive (you need to rough up the surface to be able to spray over it).

As for the non-UV stability, that is just the pigment, UV won't harm the protective properties.

I guess then POR15 is a good choice for when doing rust repairs, or does etch primer have all the rust protective qualities that POR15 does?

Oh yeah here's the gun I'm going to be using when spraying 2pak

Could somebody explain to me all the adjustments on it and what they should be set to when spraying 2pak primer and 2pak paint?
Is siphon feed ok for 2pak?

How much isolator, primer and paint would I need for doing a 1/4 panel and a bootlid?

    Thanks.

The very top knob ajusts your spray pattern, by delivering more or less air. The second adjusts your fluid flow. The one at the base near the air inlet adjusts overall air inlet pressure. Practice with some paint and a test panel, to determine where to set each. Otherwise the answer is "how long is a piece of string".

That gun might be fine for primer, as you are sanding the primer.

Best gun for 2pak is the gravity feed, as they use less air, therefore the spray will stay wetter, giving you a far superior finish.

My suction gun has been relegated to spraying metho and talcum powder on door and boot seals when checking for leaks.

    cheers Chuck.
