Yup, there are different versions of pistons, heads, cams, and intake setups.

Throughout this thread you'll find ways of identifying each of them.

I suppose the turbo rg was already goning to be a bitch down low so it should just add to it's bitchiness.

    heres a simple question.
Im about to begin rebuilding an 18RG and before i start ordering on parts was wondering what some simple changes to get the most out of the engine (power wise) would be. Not after anything amazing, otherwise id be using a different engine, just something nice and reliable and a bit better then my shitty 18RC that cannot accelerate up hills in 3rd gear.... Anything around 100hp would be great.
Its an 18RGEU block but will be on carbs

I would ditch the low compression pistons for a start and grab some 9.7:1 from an early 18RG along with some more aggressive cams also from the early 18RG. The other option would be to source some larger pistons and bore out to 2.2L. The 18RGEU head is the goods for the RG family with double valve springs and bigish valves its just let down by the cams.

As above, with the pistons and cams.
But the overall performance will probably come with a good tune on the carbs. Rejetting maybe.

Boring the engine seems a bit overkill for what im after but ill price it up and see if its worthwhile, pistons and cams from an older 18RG sound perfect though.

Was planing on buying new/refurbished dual carbies from the guy in ACT (have his name and number at home but memory is terrible)

    Hi,

The ACT guy is probably Roger? If so, he knows his carbs and is on these forums.

You will certainly notice a difference going from an 18R-C to an 18R-G engine, and with the mods mentioned above you'll get a little extra grun also.

Roger, thats the guy! Terrible memory....

I saw those pistons in the for sale section but have been tossing up whether to just go for brand new pistons/ rods etc. How hard it would be to source a new set, any good places to start?

Toyota were still selling pistons not to long ago. I'd try there first you could get lucky.
