Well i'm back in the 18RG fold After selling my turbo 18RG to a guy in the UK over 10 yrs ago, i now have one of these tank engines back in the shed. 2.4litres of stroked and bored torque machine Destined for a wee KE10 cruiser which will be a bit of a challenge.

Did you pay lots of money for it??? no? Then it's a W50..

On a different note, there was an ex-bathurst RA40 at the Mt Cootha Classic today, running a mechanical injected, dry sumped 18RG. I'll upload pics when i recover..

I paid a pretty penny for the pair of them. So it could still be. Any visual cues? Minor differences? Casting numbers on boxes and bellhousings? Come on!

According to RT104_GT on this forum you can't tell by casting numbers, they are the same. You can only tell by looking through a drain plug or something. Do some searching on RT104_GT's posts and you will probably find it.

    Hi,

Also do some searching for "P51" on these forums. There's a couple of threads. Even one with diagrams of its internals, plus a repair manual.

Yeah do a search I think the info is listed in a gearbox comparison thread. I can't find it right now but I know I saw it recently. It mentioned something about the shifter mounting flange angle and the top of the housing behind the bell housing.

EDIT: Found it Toyota gearbox comparison thread It's towards the end I think but it's only 3 pages so you should be able to find it.

    Hi,

When in doubt.. just look in the Classic Celica Index thread.

    http://www.toymods.net/forums/showth...c+celica+index

It's in there, under the gearbox section.

It'll be a squeeze but the bay is surprisingly wide (it'll take a 1UZ!!). Length is the issue so see how we go

The only way you would be able to tell the difference between the W50 and P51 is take the filler plug out and shine a torch in there and see if the P51 has cast synchros if they are brass then it would be a W50.
    Cheers Brett.
