Do you mean the ones that go form the side of the block to the bellhousing? If so, i should have the ones that came off my 18rgeu around *somewhere*

    Hi all,
Has anyone looked at or are planning on using an aftermarket fuel tank/fuel cell at all for their RG turbo build?

I'm looking at fuel cells to replace the fuel tank as 1 it's safer then cutting/drilling or welding the current tank.

Has anyone done this? Anyone know the legality of having one on a street registered car?

    Help please.

I have just bought a Scorcher electronic distributor for my 18R GU, but it doesnt have the securing lug cast into the body as the standard 18R GU distributor does.

Is there an alternative distributor clamp that can be used with the Scorcher unit?

18R-C securing clamp would be the item you want - common as dog's balls.

Hmm i might have to look into that

Nah i need the ones that bolt to the engine mounts but on an 18rgeu they can be bolted at the front as per normal 18rs and be bolted to the middle but the ones for the middle are different to go around the oil filter

18rgs use a little clamp to hold the dizzy. Edit. I may be wrong but mine has a separate clamp

Most 18R dizzys (whether RG or RC) were of the type which required an external clamp. Only some dizzies were of the type which had an integral clamping plate. I personally prefer the former.

A tip for anyone with igniter issues. I had some problems recently that turned out to be a short in the tacho, was a bugger to track down. Anyway, when diagnosing the problem many said ditch the ballast resistor as electronic doesn't need it. Fair enough I though but was dubious as Toyota seemed to think it was a good idea. It worked fine for a little while but then I had a new issue where the car would run for a few minutes and then stall like it was out of fuel and after a few minutes would start again and then conk out again depending on how long it had been off.

Limped home and checked and it had spark and fuel but noticed that the igniter was getting very hot. Had an idea that the resistor wasn't a traditional ballast and was in fact dropping the power after start which would explain the heat of an over voltage igniter. I wired the resistor back in and all good.
Yes the old Celica's are great cars thanks..

hmmmm. I have standard points on 18rg. Yet to do the electronic ignition conversion.

my ballast resistor gets very hot even after sitting just a few moments of sitting with the ignition on and not running.

Would this contribute to rough running after 10 minutes of driving?

Possibly, new ballast resistors can be purchased. Please note that the resistor is a very low value item, and as such will allow much current through it, and will get rather hot.

As for ballast resistor, if the iginition equipment you are using was designed with a ballast resistor in mind, then you can't delete it. If however you have gone to far more modern gear (like what I am using in my 18R-GTE) then the ballast resistor won't be necessary as the gear is designed to work without it.

Many years ago The ignitor went south on my car, I upgraded to a mallory voltmaster professional. MK 2 coil did away with the ignitor and resistor, ran points with no issues, later upgraded to a crane electronic conversion for points and never looked back. The resistor and the ignitor are both replaceable, Have since gone to efi with SDS programable and coil packs with crank fired ignition. Good Luck Be Safe

    Hi there fellow 18RG lovers

I currently have an 18RG in my RA23 just got a quick question, what "oil" woukd you guys recomend in using with these engines. I am in the process of lets say giving my car a full refresh the whole works and woukd like to know what top grade oil is best to use for the 18RG.

    Cheers

What has been done to the motor?? If the pistons are original, I would recommend using something like a Penrite HPR30. If you have replaced the pistons with an oversize and as such have fresh bores to match, you can sneak down to a HPR10 or HPR15. Generally I would use a semi-synthetic of a quality brand, personal favourite being Penrite.

Of course, if you have just rebuilt/refreshed the engine and the rings are new, then you will need to run the motor in on a mineral based running in oil first.
