can anyone tell me how heavy an 18r motor is?

Just spoke to Toyota:

18R weighs 165kg. I couldnt see an 18RG weighing much more or less than this.

Wow, that's heavy.
Any idea what's included as extras on that weight?

We weighed the 18R-C we took out and the 18RG we put in.

18R-C = 140kg
18RG = 130kg

While both engines were missing exhaust manifolds, it still shows that the 18RG is about 10kg lighter than the 18R-C.

I think our scales would have been reasonably correct, the two of us would have had more trouble carrying it out from the store room if it was 155-165kg.

Quoted 165kg, rocker cover to sump, no accessories attached eg exhast, manifold etc. yours were'nt bathroom scales were they? . I reckon your right about the 18RG weighing less though, got all the alloy goodness .

Yup, 18R-C has an iron head so of course it's going to weigh a lot more.

Got my 18RG tuned and dynoed yesterday (still running in the engine). Hope the chart below will be a useful reference for anyone else in regards to tuning, expected power etc.



Had a little bit of work done, bored out to 2.2L, balanced and blueprinted, mild port and polish, 40mm solexes, extractors, the usual.

Have to admit I was expecting a bit more, but she's still running pretty much stock 18RGU compression. If I upped the compression a bit more it might help.

What cams are you running?

Did you get a full rejet tune or just an idle tune and a power run?

Those fuel ratios look a bit lean in the upper end there, that might make some cause for power loss.

That's good power, and definitely a good base to start from. A set of cams and some bigger carbies (or quads) would see that jump up to about 95, but if the compression is too low, it would be a bitch to drive... Anyway, have some fun with the beast! You definitely deserve it after the stuff you've been through!

That's running 270 cams, I have some 230 cams but don't have the early cam gears for them which is why I am not using them at the moment.

The carbies have just been rebuilt so I think he just did a power run and idle tune at a guess.

Gosh! 270 cams would really be choking it a bit! Good for driveability, but with some earlier cams it'll scream!

didn't rt104gt mention that you can use a simple 18rc cam gear on the earlier cams?

Sounds like I might need to look into finding a set of early cam gears then :-)
