    Default The Natural progression.

IN 1983: REX imported this engine and could not figure it out.
it came from an ST142 GTT Corona.
I took it back to Hamilton and made it work.
So whilst the old school were frigging around making 18RGEU's go on 42mm solex.
we moved on and made this 160 PS rocket go on EFI

What sort of car did we put it into??
    ANYONE GUESS?

You are looking at the first 3TGTE imported into Australia for an RAC Rally car in January 1984.
UMM that is 22 years ago.

The car is featured in Turbo Australia Issue 9 with a Ford Laser Turbo on the front cover.

    And a turbo datsun 240 Z inside.

    Tyres were NCT Steels HR65.

daihatsu Charade 3CY turbo on page 26.

and the new RX7 and EA falcons were advertised.

ITS ALL BEEN DONE BEFORE GENTS!

Steve - i just wanted to bring back into discussion what you posted earlier about using the 18R-C chain tensioner in the 18R-G.....

was this the no.1 or no.2 chain tensioner? (ie. for the upper or lower chain?)

... reason i ask, my no.2 tensioner is spewing oil and shit all over the intake side of my engine bay, and the only spares i have are one broken one (thanks to stupid force and a shifting spanner) and another leaking one.

Anybody had any luck just replacing the O-ring in the no.2 tensioner???

... pics coming soon to explian.

I have second hand bits from upper and lower.

is your upper or lower stuffed?

The upper is driven by a plunger that screws into the left side (looking aft) of the head.

I have a spare one of those and a spare rocker thngie.

I also have a source in Adelaide of some new chains so how urgent is it and where is oil coming from?

no.2 chain tensioner is the one for the upper chain (see my dodgy mspaint diagram back on page 3or4or5, cant remember which now).

Oil is coming out of the backstroke plunger and all around, very typical of a dead o-ring.

will post more later, must fly to try and find new o-ring.

Yeah it will be aan oring along the shaft take care in undoing it, unlock lock nut first dont try to undo from the end nut section or the brass sinter will split.

well here's what i found when i opened the bonnet....

so i checked my spare no.2 tensioners. Here is what they look like when disassembled.
    Be very careful undoing them!!
Once you have removed the circlip locking the plunger in place, slowly remove the plunger vertically downwards (take it out from underneath the body) to try and retain the spring and wee teeny tiny oil control ball and cup assembly that is inside it.... if this falls out it's a BIG BIG PAIN to put it back in properly.
Then push the shaft out the bottom slowly, and it's now disassembled enough for you to see the FUBAR o-ring.

p.s. o-ring will have to wait until tomorrow now.

    RT104GT,

Im running EFI, so i have an electric fuel pump and surge tank system in the back - hence the dodgy homemade blanking plate for the mechanical pump location.

Also with the chain tensioner no.2, i'm yet to get to CBC to find a suitable O-ring, but I will post the info up as soon as i have found a replacement.

    Steve!!!!

i dont know if i've posted this question already... but i'm keen to find out details about the chain guides/vibration dampeners that you were chasing down. (not the tensioners, the slipper guides)

I remember you posting a while back that some place was looking at remanufacturing them, which is quite important considering that both the two long curved slipper/dampener/guides for the upper timing chain are discontinued and out of stock in japan.
(part numbers 13559-88270 and 13563-88250, in pic below the two red curvy guides)

This is going to become pretty important for a LOT of 18R-G guys out there pretty soon, because these are the two hardest wearing guides of the lot!

    EDIT - found the post:

I will keep an ear to the group and a wallet full of cash and I'll see how I go. I only need the timing chain tensioner slipper, or, slipper C as it is sometimes called.

i remember i had extractors (18rcturbo has them now) that i took off a 230 block, the 253 exhaust gasket matched the ports on the extractors

I am running 10W-60 oil for older cars a recent addition and my timing chain noise is down to nothing. But I have run out of tensioner adjustment. Head went back on at 140,000 about 100,000 ago still that chain and guides.
