In QLD (so not necessarily relevant to NSW), the rules for a side pipe is that they must be rearward of the last opening (no distance specified), outboard of the outermost non-seam welded or permanently sealed join in the floorpan by no less than 40mm, and not protrude beyond the bodywork when viewed in plan. If the vehicle was manufactured after Jan 1987 they must also exit on the driver's side.

So for my 1977 RA28, the exhaust can exit between the passenger door and rear wheel... which is where mine will exit This has been checked with an auto signatory.

Sound lovely. Lovely enough to momentarily give me motivation to screw mine back together.

OK, 18-rg sounds awesome. Yes, even better than 1GGTE.

I used to love just cruising slowly through an underground carpark at about 3000rpm in 1st with the window down. Sounded just like a WWII bomber.

I'm bringing my old RA40 from Aus to NZ and replacing the 18R with an RG (in pieces) that I have sitting in the garage. Pretty new to engine building so I'm trying to collect the relevant parts I will need for the engine swap/build. I know I need an exhaust manifold since the R is different then the RG. I think I found one but was asked if I want one with the O2 sensor or without. Should I be running it with an O2 sensor? Can I just plug the hold if I don't? cheers

The oxygen sensor is for the ECU management if you plan to run EFI, if you use carby, then the sensor hole can be plugged.

    Hi,

Make sure the exhaust manifold matchs the head, as there were two sorts. The manifold on the 210/230 head used smaller bolts than the later heads.

Am I correct in assuming that if it has an O2 sensor, then its for a later model head? I believe my heads were off an ra40 initially so they are probably the older head.

With that in mind, which head is more desirable, older or later? I can try and source a later head if required. I don't plan on running EFI but finding an exhaust manifold in NZ has not been easy.

    thanks

If the number cast onto the from of the head is 11111-88250 or higher (eg. 88253, 88270) then the manifold you have should fit.
There will be a part number/generation number cast into the manifold.
If the numbers are in the earlier range, it will be for an early head (88210/88230).
If the numbers are in the later range (88250+), it will be for a later head.

Late head is preferred (bigger valves/ports). Early cams are preferred (higher lift, longer duration). All cams will fit all heads.

After checking, both the heads I have are 88250 as well as the cams. Is the 250 similar to the 270 head? I'm guessing if the 210/230 cams are the choice, then the 250 has a noticeably shorter duration.

Hey all i just purchased a ra28 with that has been sitting for 18months+ under a tarp.

Just wondering if there is anything i should do or not do before i try and fire it up.

The engine supposedly had a rebuild and has done about 5000km since but who really knows.

    Cheers - Taff
