Need a bit of a favour here - which should benefit many others also. Anyone who has access to both an 18R-G variant, and either an SR20DET or 1/2JZ w/out VVTi, could you please see if the coil on plug setup from the other motor will fit the 18R-G? It doesn't need to be a neat fit, it just has to engage the plug all the way without sitting so proud of the head that it would foul the bonnet. From my research, the SR20 coil may be too long, and the JZ coil may be too short. Both are borderline from my rough measurements, and both would be sloppy in the hole, but I can make an adapter to suit.

    Owen, I'm good to you!!!

Unfortunately coilpack heights aren't so good. Look pretty silly sitting up so high.

SR20 looks the best so far. Will try the 2ZR-FE COP from the wife's Rolla before going further though (but fear it will end up too long like the others). I will be making an escutcheon plate to suit, so the height won't look quite as dicky when I am done. I am also going to use modern ISO length plugs, so the coil pack will sit a few mm lower again on mine.

Those NGK leads look pretty awesome...

I take it the JZ coil pack did engage the plug fully? Could work out as a suitable option.

Probably a stress crack being insulated to prevent tracking...

Seems like it did, I'll have a better look tonight.

LOL Not sure it came with a spare head I purchased. I did read that they were bad for getting cracks and tracking so yes the tape is probably there to stop that.

Only problem is the JZ coils require a separate ignitor. S15 SR20DET coils have an integral ignitor and are physically the same as the S13/S14 units otherwise.

mate - those Microtech X4 ignitor boxes are both farken reliable, and cheap.... like around $100 or so.

I might give the JZ coilpacks a good look in.

Owen, did they fit right without mods? I've heard they are shorter than stock from otheres that used them.

My engine builder sent them back to have the groove for the keeper ground deeper. They said it was close, looked like it fit, but engine running it likely wouldn't stay engaged and you could drop a valve.

It's on page 72 if the link doesn't bring you directly there. I still haven't figured out which BMW engine they are the same as. All the searches I did seemed to pop up with 13mm shims for the beemers. This is no longer in production, for reference only.

    Parts

All bottom end parts are common the 18RC and widely available. I suggest RockAuto Auto Parts.
Head gasket for an 18RC can be used, one hole is smaller (coolant hole?).

    Misc Info

Paradise Racing may be a resource. The text in a dead link to their site read: "Pardise Racing can custom make a valve train kit for your Toyota 18R & 18RG motors. ... Valve Seals, $25.00. Keepers, Bronze Guides, $99.00 ..." They used to carry everything, but their source fell through. They are going to Japan this summer to find new sources (for various things) and I told him if they carry 18RG stuff, we'll put it in the vendor section.

Toyhead has the same stuff as Kameari, so I didn't list him where the overlap is. He's adding new stuff always, so check in peridoically

FIPG can be used in place of some gaskets, maybe one of you vets can pipe in as to where.

(from Toymods) Terry OBiernw of Road & Track at ipswich (AU) can make the chain guides.

    Timing chain:
Lower is the RC. Upper, get one for for a 20R (98 link), but your colored links will be different from the official one

All the gears for the crank and auxiliary shaft are RC. If you buy from RockAuto Auto Parts you can get all new gears, chain, lower tensioner and guide for under $100.

Tim’s Toys used to be able to get a lot of stuff (new and used) but he hasn’t responded to my e-mails for a year. [email protected]

In order to keep this as useful as possible, I’ll just edit this thread. If you have additions, let me know and I’ll add it above.

That's a little low... did you put rings in??

On a different note, got my head back from the machinist today, the exhaust valves fit fine, the intake valves were apparently about 1mm oversize when they cut the seats to suit. These are the valves that come from SWMotorsport, and are now installed in an 88270 head. There was no issue with the collets or any other part of the valves. Now to work out the shim thicknesses...

Thought I might mention that for anyone else looking to get them.
