My starter crapped itself last night. Pulled it apart today, checked the motor itself with jumper leads once i disconnected the solenoid.
That was fine but the solenoid had fallen apart inside. I desoldered the solenoid and found the contact plate on the end of the plunger had fallen off.

The end of the plunger where it's normally swaged /crimped had let go, so all the bits were floating around.

I couldn't find a diagram of the solenoid that shows how it all goes back together. There's two springs that go on the shaft and i'm thinking that one is like a helper spring as it's thinner and goes straight after the other with a washer inbetween with the contact plate at the very end.

Has anyone looked at one lately or know if that sounds right?

I was going to carefully weld a small washer onto the end to lock it back together and see how it holds

Hey Rens, do you need another starter? I will be up Manly way during the week...I will throw a spare one in the car for you.

Building up three 18rgs at the moment, one standard for an RA28 project, a dry sump motor for the Group C car and a wild arse 2200 job for fun.

I ask my engineshop to check out the cranks and he removed the plugs to check the oil galleries to find one was mostly blocked with black carbonised burnt oil and the other two were full of a grey metallic muck like grinding paste at the ends pushed in there from centrifugal force which was effecting the balance.

He cleaned them out and said it was common for build up, but not as much as he found. My intitial thoughts it has been caused by various bearings breaking down from many hard runs which is why I rebuild my motors after about 20 hours of hard racing.

    Anyone else come across this?

Oh, and I need some new inlet valves, I have no more in my stash. Any clues where to buy em??

Yes please, if you can. I was going to give you a buzz this morning but had to go and fix a friends car then things snowballed.

I've seen inlet valves on Ebay but don't know what brand they were (no, just checked. They're exhaust valves)

Thanks for looking on the interweb.

I have spoken to David at Sleeka and he only has 2, spoken to Wilkins and their bin location was empty, both of them are going to have a look around for me. I know the Toyohead ones are exy and you need to buy their guides too tipping the bill over $1K for a full set. Next might be a message to Joel at Toysport in California, but he takes for ever to reply.

I went through my shed today and found another two heads I could strip out, but would rather keep them complete.

PM you number and I will call you on Monday about the starter.

    Cheers

    Hopefully you got my pm

I tried rewelding the end of the solenoid shaft today but it didn't take. We tried re-swaging the end of the shaft first but it seemed too brittle and kept splintering

SW should be able to source his stainless valves from his supplier when he runs out surely? Unless they too have disappeared from production

Why not bite the bullet and change to 8mm valve stems? Finding vales to fit becomes a lot easier.

Willo, I've seen that grey muck in aluminum cased (ATV) differentials. It's AL worn off from heavy use.

SS swirl polished valves and bronze guides were $160 plus shipping (4 years ago). The seals IIRC were under $20 for the set.

So I got a call today saying I could come get my head (hopefully thinking it'll be ready to put everything back together) only to be told its cracked and I need another. Not happy so does anyone have a spare 270 head that's not cracked that they would be willing to part with

Willo, did you find valves? I don't think you can beat $160 for a set including guides!
