11:1 and 98 should work fine if your tune is good. Not sure I would go much higher without a well tuned high quality aftermarket injection system though.

Can't run it on carbies? I currently run my 18RG on 98 octane so wouldn't bother me if I had to for higher comp pistons. Having to run higher octane then 98 would be annoying though, I don't see many servo's around with 100 octane, Except the occasional Caltex.

Like o_man says, your tune has to be perfect to run hi comp (10.5:1+) on bowser 98, you could detonate a piston when the dizzy timing curve is off and the timing maxes out too early. Cam timing & fuel/air mixture all has to be spot on too. I leaned out on a hot run once and destroyed a fresh engine and the $1200 forged slugs before I knew it just because the main jets were one size too small.

Hmmm. Perhaps I'll leave it to the experts.

Last time I chased rgeu rings I ended up getting the ring lands machined to take standard rings. Then blew the motor from a bad tune...

I thought I'd post this in here since no-one's likely to see it in my build thread.

I just got my head back from Abbotts Engine Reconditioning in Southport (Gold Coast, Qld).

Here's a picture of the fresh head, and one of the 18R-GU stickers I've had made.

    I'm super-happy with the work they've done:
    • Replaced all 4 inlet valves
    • Honed the valve stem holes (is honed the right term?)
    • Ground all valve seats
    • adjusted valve clearance with new shims
    • Checked valve spring condition
    • Machined the head gasket surface
    • Cleaned/Painted the head

A friend of mine dropped it off/picked it up since he knows the guy. I think he got a trade discount of some kind. All up it cost me $400

I'll put more photos up when the engine's together. I'm just waiting on a cylinder honing tool.

Where did you get the sticker made up? I'd like one that says 18R-GTE for my turbo RG

    Hey Marcus,

I actually had a whole bunch made up:

Here's the two 18R-GTE styles (when you click on the thumbnails, you'll be taken to my site):

Nice stickers. Might have to get me an 18R-GTE and the RA28 tailgate stickers. Couldn't get any worthwhile badges for the RA28 tailgate.

I checked out the idea for the arp studs but at $130 for the mitsi studs and $160 for the 7m mains its a bit pricey for my liking

if $130 hurts, for a range rover the set would cost $800... If yours have been busted maybe the extra $$ on top notch ones is worth it. How much is your engine worth to you?

Mine rusted one has a chunk missing out of the side of it. Just trying to keep the budget as low as possible apprentice wages makes it difficult
