    Hi,

When I say later I mean 18R-GU and not the 18R-G. So we are basically talking about the same thing. I refer to the 18R-G and 18R-GR as the early model engines and the 18R-GU and 18R-GUE as the later style.

The above carbs are not 18R-G/18R-GR carbs.

    agreed

another give away is the inlet manifold. the 18R-G's have a rubber hose acting as the balance whereas the 18R-GU's have a cast alloy tube( as pictured by ren_rg28)

although, this wouldnt be a sure method of carby identification seeing as its possible to swap between the models (and who would want to retain the pollution solexs anyway)

    Thanks for the comments.

So are they the pollution carbs or not? I'm not 100% sure. But I am certain that they are 44mm carbs. I just found the metal peice sitting on the carbs for the accelerator pedal a bit strange as I've never seen one on a Solex setup before...

    Ren,
Your carbies are known as "type 4".
    http://www1.megax.ne.jp/power-planni...model-list.htm

These are not the ones commonly referred to as the smog edition, or anti-pollution carbies.
The smog ones are the Type 5.

Your carbies were available in 44mm.

For those who suggested taking off the air filters and measuring the bores, that won't achieve much, as that model are tapered out from their butterfly size to a larger size at their entrance.
The most precise way is to have a look at the number stamped into the back of the butterfly. If it says "175", you have 44s, if it says "165", you have 40s.
Another way is to check the size of your large venturis (often referred to as chokes by weber people).
Part 36 is the one I refer to.
    http://www1.megax.ne.jp/power-planning/solex-type4.htm
Your large venturi will have a number cast into it that will be visible from the air filter side.
If the number is 32 or less, chances are you have 40s, if the number is larger, then chances are that you might have 44s.
The large venturis from this edition of 40-PHH were available from 32-37mm. Stock settings for 18RG/2TG were most commonly 32mm. (type 5 had 31mm)
44-PHH venturis were available in 34-41mm.

I hope that clears things up.

In the first post it says that the early heads are "rumoured to have smaller valves, and definitely having smaller ports", is it worth while to post up all the different sizes? I could only do it for 270's, but its pretty useful information, maybe when its all collected it could be added to the first post.

No you won't! Check the dyno day history and I think you'll find that MAD79R's old carby 18R-G is the most powerful 18R-G on each occurence.

If you don't want or can't be bothered tinkering with these old carbs to keep them tuned properly, then EFI is for you.

Oh, and happy St Pats day to you too, little green 18RG... to be sure, to be sure.

    River,

when i actually get my 18R-GE tuned, then we will see who has the more powerful engine. Steve's was only a fanny hair higher than mine, and i was leaning out to hell with my fuel mixutres...

... so anyone got a spare D37 male right angle PCB mounted connector?

Good carby's will always out perform crappy emission efi with small bad flowing manifolds.
DCOE's on a ported 18RG 2nd gen manifold would out compete pretty much any custom efi setup.

leaning out would be making more power anyway,

But we will also see how my twin 42mm DCOE weber's go
