I know that the ke70 rack is too wide but as there is no rack that is exactly the right measurements I have decided to go with it because I have 3 of them so if I stuff up I can redo it and also if the rack ratio is not enough after shortening it then a quafe quick rack can be shortened to fit the shortened ke70 housing.

I'd rather modify an existing rack to my requirements than use a rack which is close to the needed measurements.

Re the ae82 rack I recall that someone here on toymods has previously tried this and concluded that they would not go down this path again for some reason.

Ed (Shelldrake) and I went and looked at a TA22 GTV (fake, but that's another story) with R&P Steering, and it looked very similar to the KE70 setup that I have in mine, but the dude (tool) didn't know what it was out of...

Ed took some photos of it also... I'll get him to post them up...

Just a thought i had while reading through this topic is it possible to use a shorter lca and modify the x member to keep the same overall track to accommodate the larger size of the rack eg. ae82 is not that much longer. Not sure if this is an option but just thought id put it out there.

    Cheers

i think that will increase bump steer....and i think the ackersomething (ackerman...i think) angle would significantly effect steering....my 2cents worth.

bump steer will not be affected as long as the tie rods and lca are in proportion. but instead of shortening the rack which is what everyone seemed to be thinking, is it possible to increase the distance between the lca mounts but keep the track the same by decreasing the lengths of the lca and tie rod

Ackerman angle would only become more acute by shortening the LCAs, which presents nasty issues.

That one which Shelldrake popped up is most certainly a KE70/AE86 rack.

It's not his setup, it's a setup that was on a TA22 GTV (was really an LT) that was for sale on eBay...

Ok here is what I've do so far on the my steering column

Drilled out the spot welds and knocked off the ta22 column end and did the same to the ke70 one. I had to cut a bit off the ke70 one as the OD of the ta22 column surround is larger than the ID of the ke70 bit that I knocked off. This was welded together after getting the exact position right. The ke70 lower half of the shaft has a bearing on it which is why you need to fit the ke70 end to the ta22 column surround.

The actual column is a two piece that comes apart as below

    Ta22 top half of shaft

    Ke70 lower end of shaft

    Fitted together

the firewall plate will need to be modified to make the hole bigger so the ke70 column surround end will fit through it. This will mean that the nuts that the bolts used to secure the end of the column to this plate will be chopped out. So to get round this bolts will be welded to the plate and nuts used to hold the column end to it rather than the stock ta22 setup which uses bolts into the nuts that are part of the firewall plate.

Just remember though that the rack is too wide for the 22 and needs to be shortened to be used so if you do get one dont go thinking it will be perfect.
