Thought id give this a bump.
Has anyone successfully done this yet? and what is the verdict on the components to use.
pics pics pics! of it finished in place!
oh and any pulling in the ruts and bumps etc?
nice work on the 1.14 too![]()

Im planning starting R&D once engine is out of purple 51LII just gotta wait for dad to put up another shed
Was considering trying AE86 rack (if i can find one) and maybe VK commo (only cos i have access to one). Wont be going P/S but.

Just returned from the wreckers with an AE71/AE86 x member and an AE82 rack.
The rack mounts are about 30mm wider than the mounts on the s member but the x member needs to be cut down to fit the 22 anyways.
Also got some rough measurements, and by rough i mean pretty rough.
CAR TOTAL RACK LENGTH TIE ROD LENGTH RACK ONLY LENGTH
AE82 1250mm 380mm 490mm
AE92 - Same as AE82 if my measurements are correct
SV21 1290mm 380mm 540mm
ST162 1330mm 410mm 510mm
Also measured the distance between control arm mounts on the standard ta22 x member which gave a measurement of 540mm. I couldnt find a drag link but had some tie rods which i measured as being 300mm - i think this was my worst measurement though so if someone could correct me that would be great.
After looking in half a dozen cars i also noticed that the rack ball joints (where the tie rods pivot) were about 2" inward of the control arm mounts. Where i have quoted tie rod length above this was the length from the center of the ball joint of the tie rod to where the tie rod looked like it pivoted - ie where its ball joint probably was.
Now i know people are talking about eliminating bump steer and what not and also sourcing a rack that has the tie rods pivot where the control arms do but i am led to believe this is a bad approach.
The inward mounting of where the tie rod pivots to that of the control arm is apparent in this instance. When a car brakes, the front of it dips, which in turn makes the control arms and tie rods move upwards. As these components move, the smaller arc of the control arm in comparison to that of the tie rod means that as the control arm and tie rod rise, the back of the wheel is pushed out creating toe in. This toe in creates a more stable vehicle under braking.
Will have a better look later tonight and compare the stuff i have with that of the 22. Will also update with measurements and my findings.

hey just thought id revive this thread as ive been looking at this conversion for some time(due to changing my engine)
did you guys come to a conclustion as to which rack/cross member is the best to start out with?
seconded.![]()
I'm interested in this too, and I'm happy to do some investigative/measuring work at the wreckers. Power steering would be great but its not a necessity, so I'm interested in that too. I'll have a proper read over this thread so I can get up to speed with everyone else.
Cheers, Matt
My plan for this is to use a ke70 rack and shorten it to the required length.
This will be achieved by cutting off one end of the rack and an amount out of the housing. The housing will be welded back up and a ferrule used like a coilover sleeve. The rack will have the spanner notches machined back into the cut off end and a new thread tapped.
The rack mounts will still need to be made on the stock TA22 crossmember. Again will look at cutting off the ke70 mounts and welding them to the TA22 crossy.
The steering column and linkage to the rack will be a bastardisation of TA22 parts and ke70 parts. I have mostly finished this part so I will take a few pics if anyone is interested in seeing how/what I've done.
definitely interested. post em up.
I still think that the AE82 rack is a good one. Next time i see one floating around...
EDIT: KE70/AE86 is way way way too wide, ill take a pic next time im in the garage.

Hey could some one please post up the ta22 measurements that we are looking for in a rack(and where to take them from, pics would be a help)
Even the AE82 rack seems too wide in my opinion.Originally Posted by takai

It probably is, but i think it will end up being the narrowest easily available rack to us. Especially the one with the correct spline.
The other one i wonder about is the Daihatsu Charade, since they borrowed so much off Toyota i wonder if they borrowed the steering column too, which would make it the same spline.
Mazda 121s woudl be interesting too.

I have a 91 Ford Festiva (Mazda 121) parked outside, can get pics/measurements later this weekend. Just let me know what you want.Originally Posted by takai

I have a 121 in my garage, which is why i was thinking of it. Its about the right size, just not sure of the spline count.
