    hopefully it's related:

what strut insert did you use in this upgrade?

Doesn't matter if you cut down the tube or not.

I need new shocks for the front of the RA40 as i've lost my pair of barely-used monroe that i extracted from the yellow wreck many years ago. Car is weekend use only on bitumen and hills. Springs are 50mm lower and if need be i can use a spacer inside the strut tube to allow use of a shorter insert.

    tia,
    Charles.

    tia,
    Charles.
i put some sw20rear konis into a customers car and they felt nice and firm but nowhere near harsh. they soak up bumps well and dont seem to skip over braking bumps so id give them a go if you want. there shortstroke aswell by 25mm but i found the customers car had 145mm of droop from ride so i cut the struts 45mm which had the inserts firm once tightened so no spacers needed.
total droop now is 75mm which is pretty much spot on

What spring rate is being used with them?

330lb/in unsure of brand but those figures were from the rate tester not just a guess.
i thought it may be to stiff but they seem perfect for this particular car.

    Ok, thanks.
Thats good to hear, i was considering using the sw20 rear koni yellows with 300lb/in on the front of my RA28.

this is a 23 with a shit sr20 in it so it would be near stock weight at the front.
the yellows are whats in there and i would recomend them to anybody doing this conversion. especially when you factor in there rebuildable in aust.
    cheers

I think I have a freak set of hilux calipers My bf gave them to me, he pulled them off a dual cab hilux a while back, and he was sure it was an LN106. They are the 2 piston different size variety.

Mine wont go over the pug discs - not in terms of the diameter of the disc, i can see where they hit there, and why you would machine the diameter down, but these are fouling at the thickness of the pugeot rotor. Ie the pug rotors are 20.5mm wide, the gap in my caliper is only 15.43mm. Here's a pic to show you, though its NOT my caliper, but I can take pics of mine if ppl still dont understand what I mean.

I checked my dad's hilux resto project, his calipers look to be the same width across ( i didnt measure them though) and its an LN65R hilux. Mine could be off some other hilux and look the same but actually arent

I guess I have 2 options: either source another set of calipers (pain in the ass cos i just rebuilt these and painted them ) or take em to work and get the guys to mill them out a bit. Doesnt look like it would be much of an issue to do this, plenty of solid metal in there.

Any one else come across this? This brake upgrade seems to be nothing but dramas

This is just plain weird. I have done this conversion and it all went fine. So, what you are saying is that you have a pair of Hilux twin piston calipers that suit a solid (not ventilated) rotor?

I machined my Pug rotors down from 273mm to 268mm so that they would not foul on the rotors while they were spinning around. I'm not a fan of taking metal out of calipers.

yep i have seen these caipers before, they are for a solid disc. It catches you by surprise as you see the same size pistons and you think yes i got the right ones but only find out later that they are from a hilux with a solid disc.

i have heard of, but not seen or tried, machining away at the meat on the caliper that fouls the disc. the set that i saw was not apart so i couldnt see if machining that meat away would encroach on a fluid channel or whatever. you would have to pull them apart and check them out.

i was lucky to notice before it got to that stage

    hope this helps

ive seen ppl put spacers betwween the 2 caliper halves with extra orings in there. there not freaks theyre just the solid disc version.

I figured they were a solid disc version, but I wasnt sure if hiluxs had both solid and vented disc variants.

Id rather not space them out like some people have. Thats more chance of getting leaks and they would make the calipers sit even closer to the wheels.

Im just going to get the guys at work to mill them out for me. They look like they have plenty of meat there and I dont think there would be a fluid cavity in that region. If on the slight chance we do hit a cavity.... well shit happens I guess. Ive already spent time and effort rebuilding and painting these, shit I even forked out for new pistons cos mine were pitted

sillycar_chick: i ended up with a pair of these when i asked someone to grab me a pair ages ago. Have stored them out of shame (even did a quick-n-dirty re-kit on them before realising that they were too narrow).

They're from very early in the model range.

Before you widen that gap up, make sure the gap between new pads and fully-seated pistons is the thickness of a disk.

i havn't seen any leak yet but yes there is a chance. if they dont fit behind the wheels with a spacer in them then the vented version wont either.

the only reason i wouldnt do this is what happens if you dont expose a gallery but its only 1mm behind the surface and while your driving they blow out under the 7000odd psi of force you put on your brakes while trying to stop the car quickly.

being an engineer i would have thought you would have more sense than doing something like that but then again ive met some dodgy engineers b4 so i suppose go with whatever suits your needs.

btw the new pistons you have could be used in another set of calipers, but unfortunately the paint is non transferable.
    cheers
