It's your decision and your conscious that you have to live with as a result of that. I just hope they don't fail like Linden mentions above and you kill yourself or worse still, take some other innocents with you. Toyota (Sumitomo really) makes its calipers that thick for a reason, and no, its not to make car modders upset with the weight of the things, its so they last for donkey's years and don't fail. You don't seem like the person who would take shortcuts on something as important as brakes, especially with the trouble you are going to with modifying your car. Why take shortcuts? Money? Do you really want to do this just because of the new paint on them? Consider getting the correct calipers in the first place...

Having got a pair of these, i can assure everyone that the section she'd need to machine is not the bridge where the fluid gallery runs. It's the cast sections that form the sides of the channel that the disk runs inside.

However, i think you'd find that the the thickness of two new pads plus the wider disk wont fit between the pistons unless you pu a spacer in the bridge. Cost of spacer is probably more than locating another pair of these from the wreckers and putting a new kit in.

i was just going to say that the pads woulnt fit even if you machined it out.....

there only 150-200 a pair, and sell these ones off.....

    Thanks for the compliment.

Being an engineer and having already stripped the calipers down and rebuild them, I know what I am looking at, the part that I am talking about is part of the casting shape of the outside of the caliper and there is no fluid gallery behind it, nor is it near the piston bores.

It also doesnt have very much of a structural bearing, its no where near the mounting point for the strut, or the area where any forces exerted on the pads could transfer into the caliper housing. Its just part of the casting pattern from when they were made, really doesnt serve much purpose.

To give you an idea, refer circle on right of pic, this is the bit im talking about. You would only need to mill down that front bit, nothing past the groove you can see behind it. You would only need to mill down ~3mm off each caliper half. Its not like im machining half of the caliper away to lighten it up or anything.

If I could be bothered or had the time, I could probably knock up a 3D model of a caliper, import it into Ansys and do a FEA stress analysis on it to prove my point.... but there's probably not much to gain by proving myself to people on here. Im not dumb, I do think of safety as I know what cars can do to people, ive seen it first hand. At least I have the experience and knowledge to back it up. Not everyone has that and I can see why everyone does shy away from a slight modification on a factory part, but I dont see what the fuss is all about. I wouldnt do it if I wasnt confident.

Charles, you make a good point about the pads may not fit in there though, didnt get that far as well the calipers didnt fit to start... will inspect with my calipers again when I have a chance in between uni assignments and trying to get my bloody 4B back on the road

Just pop a pad in there static and see where the surface of the pad rests compared to the casting. Im 99% sure that it will be close to if not even with the casting.
To make those solid caliper castings they just re-set the base of the cast so it ends up being 5-6mm smaller. Hence you would have to grind down your pads to get them to fit post milling the caliper.

whilst the noltec ones do fit they only have an 8mm bolt which slops around in the body,
you would be better off using tein or other jap brand ones as they fit better and use quality bearings in them.
    cheers
    linden

    EDIT: s13 ones fit.

No mods... S13 Silvia have the exact same strut bolt spacing as the early Celicas...

I thought the s13 needed some slight modding, ie. 1-2mm bigger holes

Yes S13 just needs slight enlarging of the 3 holes... but everything else bolts right up onto the normal strut.
