I tried a Falcon idle valve with my Haltech and couldn't get it to work nicely, it just wound up pi$$ing me off. I grabbed a Commodore* throttle body from a wrecker, cut the idle control section out and epoxied two 1/2" tubes into it so it would act as a remote idle motor.

It works much better than any PWM setup I've tried.

perhaps you had the PWM running at a bad frequency....?
    or a dud valve?

I'll find out more about the ford valve soon enough

I've spoken to a friend who works at a dyno and he told me he could never get them to work nicely either.

If you want one for free, it's floating around in my garage somewhere....

nah all good, i have about three already
I'll have a chat to my tuner (SAS) about the best way to run them, since they use them regularly with all the Autronics they do.

It might be something to do with the frequency. One of the Adaptronic guys who was helping me binned an XF Falcon ISCV for another PWM one. It must've been frequency related, because it's a fairly simple device, and Autronic recommend and sell them...

It was a while ago, but it seemed like I couldn't get a subtle enough movement out of it for my ZE. The Haltech lets you play with the frequency and I matched it to a Falcon (my housemate looked horrified when I started poking around under the bonnet of her car with a multimeter)...

the bold text above is your problem there!! The 4agze has such a stupidly long intake from throttle body to valves that an ISCV has to be pulsed at really low frequency and with such small changes to avoid the engine falling over or idling like poo

There is such a large volume post throttle that the changes to air supply from the ISCV take a while to appear in the idle speed. Just look at a factory 4agze with factory management, the idle goes up and down pretty slowly when you mess with it.

Yeah I agree (enough that I eventually moved the TB and fitted a BOV to it) - But I did manage to get it to idle with a stepper motor.

can someone please check the xf ISCV campatability as below:

"The minimum resistance of any Idle Air Bypass solenoid must be at least 14 Ohms. If you use a solenoid with a resistance lower than 14 Ohms, an unstable idle will result."

    Hi,
I have spent a few hours writing software control loops (PID based with limits of everything) trying to get the VN-V6 60mm throttle body (with inbuilt idle stepper control) to work nicely on my 4AGZE.
One issue is that this VNV6 system has been sized for a 3.8L engine, so only the last 50 steps (of about 230) give sensible idle speeds on the ZE, and then the issue of inlet volume as Karl mentioned (with my 2.75" custom pipework) means that the engine takes a fair while to respond - hence the dificulty in getting a PID to work. For simplicitys sake I ended up using the stepper in open loop mode i.e. At a given coolant temperature, be at position X, rather than try to control rpm to a setpoint. Works fine like this.
    Cheers, Nick

    nick,

where you using a controller external to the ECU to do this?

Fudge!! I forgot to measure it for you Ed!

I'll try to remember when i get home.

I built my own ECU from scratch, and then realised I wanted to control a bi-polar stepper motor from a VN-V6, so had to build a bi-polar driver that interfaces to my ECU via RS232 comms..... But all the idle control routines are executed inside the ECU. Here is a link, bit out of date. I've been daily driving it (the ECU!!) for a year now in an AW11!

    Cheers, Nick

Ed - the DC resistance of the XF falcoon ISCV is 10 ohms.

You could use a ballast resistor to bump up the impedance in just the same way that Toyota does with injectors
