nah we get ya ... engine crossmember control arms mount distance plays a part
in the amount of track variance from application to application etc etc.

I'm trying to work out how adding camber effects bump steer? I guess the more camber the outer tie rod might in turn be lowered a bit as the whole knuckle kinda rolls over.

But the way I see it is control arm length has no real effect on bump steer. It is the height of everything that does it. ?

i am yet to do the conversion so i cannot back up what im about to write with hard evidence, only add some observations that i have made myself and/or heard from others.

firstly, there are a couple of problems with using the S13 control arms. you need to redrill the mounting point for the caster rods, so you dont have as much strength because where the mounting point is originally it is reinforced but where you redrill it it is not, obviously you could correct this.
secondly you have to drill your engine crossmember to accomodate the larger bolt required for the crush tube, to some i spose this isnt a problem but not really reversible, but if you wanted to go back you could always run a sleeve?
anyway thats why im attempting to use the stock arms.

another thing, the lower control arm sits parallel, sometimes above parallel when the suspension is at full extension due to the S13 coilovers being quite short. you can get aftermarket balljoints for the s13 arm that are taller so allow the control arm to sit bellow parallel, obviously this isnt much use if you are using the toyota arms like i plan to.

    Thanks mate for those observations.

I think the first 2 points are not a real concern for me away.. I'd weld some plate into the s13 control arm where i am drilling the new holes to strengthen that area.

Also like you say, drilling the hole out.. If you want to go back to standard either get another xmember or use a sleeve.

The 3rd point though, that is a problem. Not so easy to use roll centre adjusters like with a strut on balljoint setup.

I guess this all does depend on what arms you end up running though. The ae86 ones I feel might be too short and a struggle to get any decent neg camber? Guess have to wait and see when its dummied up.

I'm thinking of trying with s13 arms as I would like some more track and camber on the front. Then using rose joint outer tie rod ends and drilling out the knuckle so it isn't tapered anymore means you can lower the rose joints with some spacers and hopefully correct the bump steer that it is going to cause.

    improvedae86 is a tool?

oh sorry discuss tech ... load a balony i recon ... apart from the minimal mods to the control arm and cross member mounts for the control arms i cant see any issues besides some extra track and possibly an increase in bumpsteer due to parralelogram angles as previosly mentioned.

swayvars seem to look like they line up... i wonder if a longer custom bent castor rod couldnt be used?

only other custom change then would be enlarging lca hole...

It is a pain there isn't an easy way to lower the balljoint end of the control arm to retain a decent roll centre. Not like standard ae86/ra28 where you can just chuck a roll centre adjuster block in there.

Thats a very valid point RA28. The Silvia boys must be able change the roll centre somehow. Surely they dont all go around with their fully sick lowered suspension without fixing the roll centre? Maybe an adapter between the strut and hub thingy rather than ball joint and hub.

Never over-estimate Nissan boys with the fully sick lowered suspension ha.

But yeah.. I have heard rumors of an aftermarket balljoint that is taller than standard.

Does anyone know if the sigma control arm kicks up at the end as much as S13 does? If the arm was flatter that would be a good thing.

I run GH control arms in my car. These are the best pictures i can find of the arm that'll show you how much it 'kicks' up at the end.

Mmm yes much flatter at the end.. I'm thinking this would 'help' rollcentre on lowered cars..

like i mentioned in my above post you can DEFINATELY get taller balljoints for the S13 to fix roll center, although i dont think they are readily available in australia. they come up on yahoo japan tho.
