the R33 setup isn't that expensive, just the R32 ones required the crazy brackets with way more machine work than id ever want to do again.

just remember that you get what you pay for.

This is what was driving my reasoning...

    Standard path:

USD$200 - New T3 Weld On Coilover Kit
    USD$180 - New T3 Adjustable Camber Tops
~AUD$500+ - New decent adjustable dampers
~AUD$560 - Hub/Disc Machining and Caliper Adapter (for RA28 Strut and R32 Disc/Caliper) - How much for the R33 setup?

    S13/S14 path:

~AUD$800 - New S13/S14 HSD HR Coilovers (which already have Adjustable Camber Tops, and decent adjustable dampers)
    ~AUD$200 - LCAs, Hubs, etc...

Then the rest of the stuff (Discs, Calipers, Lines, etc...) is the same for either path, so I didn't bother adding those to the budget...

    What do you mean?

That you tried the suggested setup/s and it was shithouse? Or toyota's suspension setup design is just shit house?

Not having a go at all. Just didnt totally understand your point

    dang it
I was seriously considering it becuse of the access i have to loads of free s13 shit.

Surely if a rack and pinion conversion where in mind it could be adjusted accordingly tho.?

Linden, if you dont mind explaining the exact handling problems you had with setup? Exactly what setup did you have? short s13 strut, or longer s14 strut? Did you have longer BJ to adjust RCA? s13 LCA or Sigma? Thanks

rebuilt S14 tein's with the S13 upright drilled to suit the larger 14mm bolt. used std s13 lower control arms with a funny combo of tie rod and rackend. i tried running the car at varying hights aswell as lengthening/ shortening the rack but nothing worked.

i can't see anybody doing this conversion (cause its cheap) spending bulk $$$ to sort out the bumpsteer issues etc that it will create. the std geometry is heaps better and will ultimately give far better performance if you spend a couple of bucks putting decent inserts and springs in.

brake upgrades have been covered to death on here from the CPH setup thru to bigmat's 324mm 4 piston upgrade i did months ago.
wait 5 or so weeks and ill show you the brakes going on my track rolla 343mm with 4pot brembos on XT130 struts with inverted inserts

if you guys just do it because its cheap then thats fair enough but i made the mistake once b4 and il never do it again.

Btw add lock spacers + adjustable LCA's + adjustable RCAs into the equation + the R&D to get it setup correctly and your once cheap brake and coilover upgrade became darn expensive didn't it!!!!

    cheers

Thanks for sharing that linden. Definantly worth looking into another setup if thats the case. I wonder if you could get away with using the s13 sprindle and s14 strut with a different LCA combo and rack end etc.

Or better of just going totally for the xt130 corona path.?

There's many different LCA and rack end combos (MX62 LCA with AW11 Rack End, S13 LCA with MX83 Rack End, etc...), but finding the right one may end up costing you a fortune...

Just got my hands on an s13 front end
I was thinking about using the s13 cross member aswell. Just did a super quick comparison will post pics and measurements later. I will measure the entire s13 front end before i do anyting drastic.

The bolt spacing on the cross member S13 is 4cm wider(same as r32 but different engine mounts), ra28 = 73cm vs s13 = 77cm apart. It wouldnt be hard to weld an adapter plate onto the s13 cross member tho. Using the s13 cross member MAY be easier then relocating LCA mounts, and custom rack conversion to ae71 cross member or alike. Power steering is also a easier option. Ill sus it out and let you know

EDIT: S13 center to center distance from strut towers is 108cm aprox (body metal, not camber top) and ra28 is 101cm aprox. Could you cut out the S13 strut tower top hat and weld in place of ra28 strut tower top hat to acheive the 108cm width? Or wouldnt bother as it would contribute to neg camber and could be dialled back out suitably with camber tops? need to dial out 3.5cm each side? Any thoughts from someone with a little more experience on this shit then me
This is my first real crack at anything suspension related so please excuse my stupidness.

i did the hilux/pug thing years ago in my sprinter and have since gone s13. personally im far happier with the s13 bits in my situation.
i had unknown rate springs with big bilsteins and the handling wasnt great, also the brakes were way over rated imo but i wasnt using any fancy pads.

with my s13 setup i had custom struts made up that were longer than standard, with agx adjustable mr2 inserts and a decent rate spring (around 200lbs from memory).
my car now handles and brakes better than it did with the hilux/pug setup, but it was missmatched from the start and the bilsteins were old.
i have bump steer but its not unbearable, i dont take my car on the track. i plan on addressing that issue later down the track maybe with RCA balljoints or maybe even raise the steering rack i dunno.

    Jeffro,

I know that some of the AE/KE boys have been syaing that to put an SR20 into one of said vehicled that you can use the whole cross member from an S14 and there is little drama associated with this. This idea i guess lends support to your measurments. From there I guess this would mean that measurements on the RA are similar to the AE/KE and indeed the S14 crossmember.
