who makes vmx80? (sorry i may of missed this earlier in the thread)

My r154 sounds exactly the same as yours blacksupra, I just have some crappy valvoline synthetic gearbox oil in there. It's especially hard to shift into any gears on a cold morning, and once up to temprature the GB is a real bastard to downshift have to double clutch most of the time, and even then it's not always a smooth change. Upshifting is also quite difficult but not as bad as downshifting.

GB has done about 100,000km's. Only ever had that valvoline crap in there so i would like to give this vmx80 a try.

why not try Superlighweight over lightweight. It's meant to be 'more slippery' for synchro gearboxes but still part of the higher quality shockproof range.

I'll be needing a new clutch in the not too distant future, and I'm tossing up between a twin plate and getting a clutch place to build me a hybrid full-face (or button?) to deal with it... I'm guessing our setups will be making similar power/torque

As cambelt mentioned to me in a conversation we had on the weekend, much like an engine, a gearbox has tolerances that obviously wear with age and much like an engine, turns out my box was 'like new' and the oil i was running was not appropriate for the application.

I used to have to do the double clutch thing as well. It's now a smooth change everytime including downshifts like a W58.

I would also recomend that you check the adjustment on your clutch, made mine even better by turning the adjustment just one thread on the slave!

Problem was the oil was already too slippery for the box. The synchros were not engaging the gears because the oil was lubricating the parts too well! I actually needed a lesser oil for it to engage the gears better.

I had a bit of a read of the redline literature last night, and what they're claiming is almost the opposite. That MTL is actually LESS slippery than most gear oils, hence it works very well with synchros (which need friction), hence improving shift quality. And with all the other stuff like very high shear resistance and good film strength, box lasts longer too. What I couldn't differentiate is what advantave (if any) the MTL has over the lightweight shockproof. If anyone knows, I'd like to They do a 'superlightweight' shockproof, and I quote: "recommeded for gearboxes where durability is not a concern" Basically, it transfers the absolute maximum power (less drag), but things wear out fast....

Amazing, r154 shifting as smooth as a w58 who would of thought!

Going to get some of this oil right away will post back with my findings.

Also i didn't know these clutches could be adjusted, i seemed to be under the impression hydrualic clutches were set and forget. I will read up the TSRM and check this out too.

Thanx for the advice save me taking the box out and getting it pulled down/rebuilt/replaced.

    Most old boxes stink anyway

My W58 has had VMX80 in it for the past 5 or 6 years and shifts beautifully. Smelly yes - but I refrain from it as mouthwash so I don't really care

I emailed REDLINE the other day, just to see what they would recommend, they replied with 75W90NS for the gearbox, and 75W90 for the torsen differential.

    interesting.

10 years ago i was pulling a box out of a car and the tailshaft slipped out of the box when the box was on top of me, i then found out how hard it is to clean your pubes of gear oil , i smelt for weeks after that. i think i even shed a tear or 2

    Hi,

I hear you brother. I've had more than my fair share of smelly old boxes leaking over my pubes. You're right, the smell can linger for quite some time.

River, you're a bad bad man!!!

That's nothing, while helping chrizor change his smashed up T series diff at Dubbo this year I scored a single drop of smelly-ass diff oil, get this, right up my fricken NOSTRIL! The angle was perfect, it dripped of the diff housing & scored a bullseye.

At least you don't have smell receptors in your pubes....
