Forgot to add, i couldn't get a socket onto the gearbox filler nut, so filled it up via the shifter whole in the cabin, i had a pipe going from the Oil container to the shifter whole and i wasn't paying attention but the pipe came out and i spilt STINKING GERABOX OIL ALL OVER MY INTERIOR!!

Methinks I needs to get some VMX80 next time I change oils![]()

yes im not a big fan of redline gearbox oils its not the best stuff and ive seen bad results with it on dogboxes at werk.
i highly recommend MOTUL fully syn 75w-90 never had a problem i swithched to it a couple of months ago in my W57 and its a shite load smoother changing gears.does/has anyone else used MOTUL fully syn?
Great thread guys! I plan on changing the oil in my R154 this weekend and will use the VMX80 as recommended by you blokes.... one question though.... how much should i buy? I can't find anywhere that tells me how much i'll need
Cheers!
Dan
Well just to throw a spanner in the works, I went from vmx80 which was almost un-usable in my r154 to lightweight shockproof and 250ml of nulon shift conditioner and the shift quality is sooo much better there is absolutly no comparrison.
My r154 is pretty unhealthy though, and having read this thread it looks like i too wasted $120 on oil and will have to change to MTL in the future.
Oh great! Haha
I'm still going to try it... how many litres do i need to buy for a complete change?
Dan
Danners all i can say is the VMX80 was many times better then the valvoline i had in it before. But yeah the gearbox shifts still suck, just way better then they were before.
Now i feel as if i must get onto kemicalx was using if it was that much better then vmx80.
(PS the amount needed seems to differ from various places of information. If only i could undue the filler nut on the gearbox i could get the correct level, but i didn't have a suitable tool to get to this nut. So i ended up pouring about 4 litres thru the shifter hole)

I've never ever changed manual gearbox oil... so this will be interesting. I've checked the TSRM but there are no instructions on how to do any of it.
The TSRM does however mention that 3 litres of oil is required for the R154, and 2.4 litres for the W58!

mmm as i said i think the main diference between mine and dongs boxes would be their physical health.. mine has very loud bearing noise when booted in reverse, and a scratchy bearing noise when put under load (ie. 4th gear @ 45-50km/h) only reason vmx80 would have done poorly in mine would be because it can't blanket the ill box like Redline can..
If your gearbox is in good health, knowing now that shockproof isn't the best choice for syncro boxes i'd suggest giving vmx80 a go, it's only $30 afterall.
This week has been the first week i've dirven my car and i'm hearing some very loud high pitched whirring coming from the box in 1st, 2nd, a small amount in 3rd, and reverse. I dropped it straight into my car without checking the condition of the box... so to be honest i'm just hoping that doing an oil change makes these noises go away
