ugh, I have bad memories of dropping joorsh's diff oil
if you can imagine a wet dog covered in fermenting baby-shit, you're somewherenear the smell of that stuff.
What the hell is wrong with gbox oil? engine oil never smells that bad.
AHAHAHA...now that is just funny.Originally Posted by cambelt1

i run vmx80 and add some moreys oil additive stuff, takes heat out of oil. feels pretty good to me.
thing is, it's a modified car, you want more power, you create more heat as a byproduct, this also happens in your trans, which stress's things out at an exponential rate (V8 supercars use them on their hollinger boxes which apparently aren't sequential, nor ever have been for a reason...), thus reducing the life of your transmission, and hindering it's ability to 'shift like new' .
basically, as soon as you even thought about modifying your car, it started thinking about ways it could fuck you around, cost you lots of money and generally not do what you want.
fact of life, probably even written in the bible somewhere...

SLO - since when have V8 Supercars had a squential box?
That's a good point. I looked at it and twigged something wasn't right, but didn't pick it. They use "conventional" 6-speed Hollinger H-pattern boxes don't they?Originally Posted by Blue_Stivo

Yes they do same bax as i use in the mid mount sport sedans.
Perfect oil for a synchromesh gearbox is a hard ask. Simply because gears turn better with less friction, but synchros are less effective with less friction. Think of dipping your brass button clutch into a bucket of oil before you install it and you will have an idea as to why the super slippery stuff (recommended for dog boxes in race applications) is not so good for synchro boxes.
Synchros need some lubrication or they will be too grippy (ie no transition), so there is a fine balance. Also since the super slippery stuff is so much thinner it provides less protection due to quicker heat build up and microscopic interference (hence accelerating wear). It may transmit more horsepower (measurably so) but at the expense of service life.
Its a complicated topic, just do a search on tribology and you will see.
they wern't always H pattern were they?????Originally Posted by Blue_Stivo
looked like they used sequential last i watched some in car footage (be a fair few years ago now) but obviously i'm a fool, and don't know what i'm talkin bout.
damn damn damn.

lol H pattern is up and down and the hollinger gates are pretty close so you prob dint see the sideways movment as it would look up and down.![]()
I changed my gearbox oil on the weekend. I just used Valvoline Duragear, and put a tube of Nulon gearbox treatment in there, and its sweet as.
I've tried the other oil the manual recommends, an 80W and the box crunches like crazy. I changed to a 75W90 and its fine. Just goes to show how crucial it can be to select the right oil
Hi glen, i run Penrite Hypoid gear oil in my R154 behind the 302 and it works awesome, never ever had a problem with it going into gear when cold, hot, under load or whatever...give that a go....I actually mixed a bit of 85w140 and 85w90....and yeah is great! Also use it in my diff (lsd oil obviously) and it works a treat as well...
I would like to know how Redlines 75w-90 feels in a R154 compared to Lightweight ShockProof... Since its the correct weight?

the lightweight shockproof feels much nicer in the box than the castrol fully synth stuff of the correct weight that I was running previouslyOriginally Posted by JZA70 R

This is also a good read on syncro & oil relationship.
