Seriously though, changing the oil is relatively easy, isn't it now just a matter of chucking it all back together & trying different oils until it does what it's supposed to? Starting with something cheaper but still decent quality (like the castrol) then if no luck with that something better but not as heavy duty (like redline super light weight).
I reckon it's great news that your box is ok, & it's just the oil causing your problems.![]()
Don't forget to deglaze the synchos first![]()
Glen - i am very interested to hear what kind of oil they recommend for you. Remember i have a large bounty of full synthetic GulfWestern waterclear 75W-90 gear oil - it works beautifully in my W58, as it has also done in multiple E58 boxes, C56, C52, T50 and W50 gearboxes that i've put it into.
Shits on the price of Castrol Syntrax too.
...... butt scratcher?!
I was going to suggest castrol syntrax, but if you can get that Gulfwestern for a better price....

This is fairly strange. I'm running the lightweight shockproof in my E153 and it absolutely transformed the shift quality.
I'll have to keep an eye on how it holds up over time though.
I have seen a fair bit of mention on US boards of using a mix of 75w90 and GM Synchromesh. Apparently the GM stuff is super thin and causes issues when used alone but the mix is meant to work well.
Just becareful mixing oils. They all have diffrent properties so do a bit of research on the oils before playing with them.Remmember, the trouble with the net is you dont get the follow up down the track most of the time.
The guys that say it works brilliantly will not ususally come back on and say the box blew up a month later etc.
I like Torco oils as ive seen the before and after of engines and boxes using it for years, but there are plenty of good ones. Royal purple is good, redline, gulfwestern, some of the castrols etc etc.
Somoe of peoples problems come from the oil overheating or getting just over or close to its breakdown point. If you are giving it a hard time, change it often as it isnt that expensive.Get a magnetic plug for the box if it dosnt have one and have a good look at your oil when you change it compared to the new oil in a white container etc.
Run it threw your finger tips, using new one hand and old the other and smell each{yes i know it all smells crap} as all this will help you understand what is happening. You can even do what the truck guys do and send a sample off to be tested.

Redline shockproof is no ordinary oil... at low loads it has the viscosity of a 75W/90 but under high load it thickens up to around that of a 250 weight oil!
It's good oil but not worth the money... most people who are using it (i.e. people with rooted gearboxes) would probably get the same result by putting thicker oil in and at the end of the day the gearbox is still rooted (just dying quietly).
I was told to use some easyshift.
Another alternative is to mix Dextron III and gear oil.
Going to go the easyshift option first though i think.

mates uncle was sponsered by redline - he absolutly hated the shit - will never use there products again
Has any one noticed that redline produce a Manual Transmission oil, MTL designed to be used in transmissoins with synchros, Shockproof is designed for racing box or diffs. read the info about their products it clearly states there.
I think that using the correct fluid for the gearbox would have not resulted in the the glazing of the synchros.
I will be using Redline MTL in my R154.
