Also, the 4K-E project has now become the 7K-E project.

umm, i thought you'd want to only connect a shield wire at one end, so probably at the MS end?

i like the idea of shielding the VR sensor wires, (i think toyota usually does), but not all cars have it shielded.

yeah all the earth pins in MS are usually directly connected (can check the PCB layout/ schematics to be sure for your version)

Yeah I thought you only connect the shield at one end, most of the diagrams though show the shield connected to the EDIS module with the other shield on the VR wiring connected to the same pin.

So I figured maybe it is a pass through to run one shield from ECU to VR sensor. Will run a shielded wire to the VR sensor, should be enough spare on my 8 foot loom. will leave the black wire disconnected, think it is only needed if using a hall sensor.

doesn't EDIS need a ground wire (black) to work? ie to ground the coil through?

Apparently not back to the ECU, there is only a black wire in the shielded part of the loom as it is used for a hall sensor. EDIS only connects to pins 24 and 36 on the ECU, obviously it also has its own ground wire but it doesn't go back to the MS directly.

oh, sorry, i was talking about the EDIS ground

My DIYPNP for my 4AGE (soon to be 7AGE) AW11 should arrive today! Slowly working my way through this thread and all the other info out there. Steep learning curve but really looking forward to having a play with it.

Arrived as planned and resistors installed I'll get the rest done this weekend.

A quick question. I accidentally put a tiny scratch on one of the boards covered wires. It didn't go through the clearcoat but got me wondering. Is there anything that can be painted on to be double sure it's still protected?

How about varnish or clear nail polish assuming it doesn't react with the circuit board. Try it on a old computer mb or some broken electrical device first.

You can get pcb board lacquer or just some liquid electrical tape from Jaycar.

Any one run their EDIS VR sensor off the flywheel? Either attaching a trigger wheel or machining one in? I'm considering it due to the very tight packaging on a 7K when running air con in a Starlet, will be very tricky getting the sensor in. Flywheel is going to need machining/lightening anyway so probably worth investigating.

Hi everyone, got a few questions about Megasquirt for myself..
I have a 2TG TA23 running twin sidedrafts currently, and i'm about to convert to EFI (tuneability and turbo next year..)
I have the STD computer and loom but I figure it would be easier to wire it all up and get aftermarket up and running now before turbo and other upgrades come along. \when i'm off p plates.

From what i've read the QIY Megasquirt 2 with 3.0 mainboad will do the job I need.. but i'm not sure how circuit board-noob friendly they are, i've done heaps of stereo/gauges/central locking/alarm wiring but never circutry. Are they do-able?
I would also like to control both fuel and spark, but I am confused as to how to hook the spark up to it and how it can control the advance and retard if the dizzy is locked.
I have both a STD points/cam driven dizzy and then an aftermarket electronic ignition unit with a four tooth 'magnetic? (I think)' controlled dizzy with an external box. I'm not sure which one to use and if the electronic ignition box will then be redundant.. Will I need to build a hall sensor or use whats there?

I am a noob to EFI but a quick learner.. Hopefully you can fill in the gaps of what I can't find answers to

    Thanks, Cameron

use the dizzi with a VR sensor - you remove the mechanical advance bits and using some carefully chosen metal screw/bolts, fix the upper and lower bits together. The vacuum advance thing is removed and you lock the rotating plate to prevent it moving as well.

The megamanual has some notes on how to setup the dizzi
    http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms1extra/...anual.htm#MSnS
    or
    http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms2extra/...a_Dizzy.htm#vr

When I setup my dizzi in the 18RTE, I moved the rotating plate around to approx 60 degrees BTC (set engine to #1 TDC, install dizzi so the rotor is pointing at #1 plug, move plate around so the trigger tooth is about 2/3's the way between plug #1 & #2, rotate the engine to check that you haven't got the direction of rotation wrong, repeat the first 3 steps as you realize you did, tighten down rotating plate). Then follow the manual on getting the trigger accurate.

or (for MS1-extra, others are similar):
    Setup - VR sensor
    1) Set the crank at 20BTDC
    3) Make sure the rotor arm points towards the correct contact in the distributor cap
    4) Bolt down the distributor
    5) Turn engine backwards until the pip lines up with the VR sensor
    6) Measure angle BTDC (+/- 10 degrees is good enough) at the crank
    7) Enter measured angle in "Trigger angle" of Spark Settings
    8) Enter "Fixed angle" to 10 degrees this tells the ECU to ignore the spark map and hold it to the Fixed Angle.
    9) Start the engine
    10) Adjust "Trigger angle" until the timing light is at 10 degrees
    11) Set "Fixed angle" to -10 , this tells the ECU to run from the spark map again.
    12) Start tuning

Also, I built the LM1815 VR decoder circuit rather than the tunable VR interface as found on the V3 PCBs and later. Was one less thing to worry about (getting an unknown engine running EFI without killing it).
