Red face Keeping my underbonnet temps down. plenty of Qs.

    Car is a 90 Celica GT-Four with a 3sgte

Heat Wrapping a Ceramic coated manifold???
I've heard a few people say its a bad idea because the ceramic coating coating starts to come off the manifold and get absorbed by the heatwrap. But im not entirely happy with the heat coming from it.. its great but i still want less radiant heat. unfortunetly my fmic piping goes over it as part of the cold side but i am trying to work out a side feed for it.

    Custom manifold heat shield?.
because it is custom i couldnt use my stock heat shield so now its just exposed, but ive seen people use some kind of silverery material as a custom heatshield. anyone know what it is? where to get it? links?

    Mild Steel
I've heard from a guy that does a bit of track work that mild steel can crystalize and break when heat wrapped with track temps.. i plan on doing track days. anyone heard of this?

    Alternator.
When using the stock system there was an alternator insulation shield and an air intake to it. but the custom manifold meant that i couldnt use it. now its sitting within a couple of MMs without the heat shield . Im thinking of using the heat insulation silver tape?? i dunno where to get it but ive seen people use it on the bottom of their TMICs to keep the temp down.

    Intake piping
Does heat wrapping it actually keep it colder? or would it keep the heat in a bake it??

    Thank you for enlightening me!!

    wrapping coated manifold (exhaust?)
depends on the coating, and how hot the manifold gets. some shit coatings will fall off.

    heat shield
use that ACL stuff, like used on the turbo falcons, awesome stuff.

    mild steel
bullshit. mild steel is already crystallized

alternator.. yeah your alternator is going to get rooted. you NEED a heat shield.
that aluminium tape does buggerall for serious heat

    wrapping intake
it depends what temperature is inside and outside.

^ ^ what OC said. using the XR6 turbo falcon shield stuff will definitely help - plus it's nice and malleable.

I'm in the same process as you. Do you have a CAI?

As others, use that ACL stuff to cover the manifold & also to make up a heat shield between the dump pie & the alternator.
Wrapping is designed to keep the heat in, which also keeps the exhaust gas speed up, helping turbo spool. How much it helps is a well discussed topic.

I've work out a way to get the alternator duct back on. These have gotten progressively longer over the various 3S models. ie the Caldina one actually ducts all the way into the inner guard.

Intake: wrapping it generally will keep heat in, which is what you don't want, but if it's passing by things that are hot (turbos, exhausts), then you don't want that heat coming in. But again, a heat shield in this case would probably be better than wrapping it.

Look at heat shielding brake / clutch / power steering reservoirs to!

    My engine bay:

The heat shield is made from the ACL stuff you can buy at Supercheap.
My dump pipe is wrapped with exhaust wrap and then sprayed with VHT exhaust paint.
The alt is the stock one with the front cut off and more aluminium tape added.

All seems to do the job.

Just a quick 30cent upgrade to get heat down is to pack your bonnet bolts with washers...(might need longer bonnet bolts) give the bonnet an inch or so gap so it doesn't close flush where the hinges are...
Did this on my mates R32GTR you can watch the heat pouring out after a hard hoot..

Except that when the car is moving, the area at the base of the windscreen is a high pressure area, hence the reason for the ventilation system intake being there.
Venting the bonnet further forward, like just behind the radiator would be much more beneficial.

ACL shield was ~$40 for a big piece... enough to do mine with some left over.
