Default 1JZ engine temps vs 18RC engine temps

Hey guys, its not what you think. Im sure most times, the 1JZ Will eat and than spit out a 18RC...

The question is, what water temp range does an 18RC operate in as opposed to the 1JZ...

Curious as i want to know if my standard water gauge will give me an accurate, or atleast close enough water temp...

    Cheers,
    Jase

The sender for the guage is the important part not the guage itself.

Why not see if the RC sender will fit on the JZ motor somewher and just use that?

Ahhh, ofcourse... This is actualy what linden was telling me, but i made the assumption that if it fits, it will work and grabbed what i think may have been a 7mgte one... Cant remember now. But i'll hunt down a 18rc one...

Also, anyone have toyota part number? As i went to toyota and they kept bringing me different temp sensors, and i think they said they all had the same part number...

It might be a better option to just buy an aftermarket guage with actual temp markings as opposed to just a cold and a hot mark. Generally, standard guages at operating temp dont tend to move a whole lot so a 10deg increase will probably not even budge the guage. Although they give a rough indication theyre not very accurate so to speak.

Yeh i will get an aftermarket auto meter or something when i have more money and time... Though the temp sensor is attached to the fuel sender. So i'll have two temp senders which will look ugly and annoying lol

I once hooked up a TA22 temp gauge to my 2JZ, using the 2JZ sender. Once the engine was fully warmed up the indicated temperature matched the thermostat opening temperature precisely. It would seem Toyota water temp sensors haven't changed since the early 70's at least!

From what i could find in a quick search the consensus was that a 1jz thermostat is 82deg. Wouldnt be suprised if the 18r was the same or at least very close.

    Hi,

Yeah, the 18RC opens around 78-82 deg C.

My 1G-GTE indicated low temp using the stock sender in the RA28. Switched back to the 18RG sender, and the guage sat perfectly on the normal mark. My 1JZ installation into a RA23 also used the 18R sender with the same result.

Match the sender and the guage, and all is well.

POI, when the Aus assembled Camry's first arrived in the UAE, the locals could not accept a car that indicated normal operating temp, considering the very warm climate in which they were operating. Toyota's fix, was to install a different sender, which then indicated a higher temp on the guage. The locals then accepted the car!

18RC as mentioned by River, 78-82 deg thermostat.
    4A-GE 82 deg thermostat,
    1JZ-GTE VVTi 82 degree thermostat.

    cheers Chuck.

Cheeers Chuck, i imagine the 7M would be similar than aswel? Cause im pretty sure thats what this sender came off, cause i went to the wrecker, tried a whole bunch and one worked. I know there was a 7m there, but this one came from a bucket of assorted goodies... I assumed 7m later...

Do you think i should get a 18RC sender still? Or this should be okay..?

    Cheers<

It sounds like you are wanting to use the gauge to measure the engine temp.
Its a bad idea as they should only be used as a guide.

If your that concerned with engine temp, use a proper thermocouple temp sensor.

BTW, i found that the sensor on my 21R is a different range to that used in 18R's, so, no, they are not all the same values.

VDO temp gauges are like $40.

no aftermarket sender required on the 1GGTE either, it worked straight up

I eventualy want a Oil Pressure and a water temp gauge. And i dont know if i could make the fuel/water temp and charge / oil gauge work if i just cut them in half...

So i'll probably, at the same time, get a volt split fuel level gauge at the same time, if thats available. water pressure and fuel, or water temp and fuel combined, and a seperate fuel/air mixture or volt gauge or something... What ever i decide is most important to keep an eye on at that point in time...

So when i do it, i wanna get all 3 gauges, and i want all black face with orange numbers so it matches the speedo + oldish look, and then, since im doing it, i'd probably replace the el dodgy stock speedo and rev gauge, to something that displays my actual speed and revs

    Cheers,
