While it is common to get a BHG in these, the last time this sort of thing happened and it wasnt the head gasket, it was because the radiator was blocked. Do you know the history of the radiator?
ps - i would be checking for signs of a BHG...
1992 Cressida, MX83
took the car into aircon guy yesterday, got the car back today, first of all they broke one of the brackets holdings the radiator fan cover on, so cover was hitting fan, fixed that.
But
Drove the car for a total of an hour today, basically all just cruising and the car temp was rising a bit too high for my likings
Usually sits bit below middle, but after driving it was well above middle, like bordering on 3/4
Soo, my question is, is it normal for the car to run hotter when aircondition is being used?
never worked before and just had it fixed.
also i had a look while i left it idling
and the thermo fan isnt spinning? havent taken any notice if they spin whilst idling or only when car is accelerating.
Radiator is in good condition and coolant is a very nice green.
any help would be greatly appreciated!
thank you

i've only owned the car since October, i've had no heat problems until now, which is the same day i got the car back after the aircon was fixed
but the bracket on the cover was broken, so it shows that the guy that did it was pretty rough about it/didnt care
so im thinking he possibly disconnected the thermo fan which is why i asked the question should it be spinning whilst on idle.
In regards to the BHG according to the dealer the engine was replaced or rebuilt (he wasnt too sure -_-) 80,000ks before i got it.
Car has been running fine still, no dodgey smoke. Will check the oil to see colour/thickness etc
more so just checking would/could the car temp be higher because of aircon being reconnected and used?
thanks for the response!
if you have a cooling system issue (blocked rad stuck thermostat)running the a/c will put heat load directly onto the radiator.
Thermo should be temperature switched should it not? So if the car is hot, it will be on independent of if the car is idling or not
While on the topic of temperature switching thermos.. can anyone tell me if the plug at the very bottom passenger side of radiator is the temp sensor for this?
KE20 CA18DET / RN25 12R / IS200 1G / NA MX5 B6
just to clarify, is the radiator fan shroud still on there, or did you "fix it" by removing it?
Has the radiator been removed, is it possible, there is air in the cooling system?
i have had a problem with my thermo fan not working before on my mx83. i just used a permanent marker and marked a line and then drove the car and saw if the line was in the same spot. thermo fan should still run even on idle.
one more thing is there 2 thermo fans a large one and a small one on the passenger side. becasue it was the smaller one that wasn't working on my car, if i remember right

Radiator hasnt been removed.
Got out the old volt meter and wiring for the thermo isn't getting power, but still the radiator fan should be enough to keep it cool.
nope, drilled a hole through the plastic and ziptied to to where abouts the bracket would keep it.
will keep that in mind, ill take it for a short drive tomorrow and see how it heats up with no aircon.
ah makes sense, ill get the thermo wiring fixed, then hopefully that should be the end of my worries..
if not ill actually take it to a mechanic.
thank you!
This might sound silly, but is there actually enough water in the radiator??
yep, topped it up on friday, believe i may be losing coolant somewhere. Hopefully its just a crack in a pipe or something.
