Yeah it sounds like your regulator is over charging
Just replace it you should be fine
If you dont it'll overcharge everything and you could fry something and that could get very expensive
This problem happened to me a while ago but I can't remember what I did to fix it. My 1992 celica SX above 4000rpm ish will display the battery light intermittently.
Any quick fix? I thought it could be the voltage regulator, would this affect the performance (of the amazing 5sfe powerhouse) at all?

it might not hurt to put a multimeter on you battery. then rev it up and see what it does.
so much stuff. so little time.
Also check your battery water level can cause problems.
Check all the above, but also have you checked how the fan belt is in condition & especially tension wise ..
Thanks for the replies, i'll have to check the condition of the battery water level too.
I haven't had the car long but did notice the belts did have some cracks (something i'll get onto asap) but they do seem like they are tensioned enough.
A regulator is a pretty cheap fix on these alternators so i'll get onto that asap.
Would this problem effect the overall running of the car in that rev range?

Hi
I think you need your alternator rebuilt, most likely its the brushes, but no auto elec (including myself) will pull it off just to do that, to much of a big job and cant give warrenty, you have a nippon denso alternetor so they very rearly overcharge....
Hope that helps

Why do you consider it such a big job when its 2 bolts to remove the alternator and a couple of screws to pull out the armature to look at the brushes?
You cant get much work as an auto electrician if all you know how to do is change fuses.
brushes are near end of life, check voltage at revs.
inspect, replace.

I work at a auto parts store and we sell the regulators/brush set quite a bit with no worries
The armature won't always be worn though?

Mr89 is right an auto electrician is always going to reccommend a reco over just changing brushes as they will see it as delaying the inevitable. That said if u want a quick fix brushes and reg do it yourself not a hard job if u have even the slightest amount of tech savvy.
Wish I had a F#%ken awesome toyota.. saving for the goodness now.... stay tuned....
I guess in the same principles they may replace the whole engine as a delaying the inevitable too lol, extreme case I know lol. Regulators are nice and cheap (compared to an alternator) so i'll give that a go.
Recos are usually not much better, I had a reco alternator in one car and it lasted just over 1 year. New alternator wasn't much more.
Thanks for your help everyone![]()

I cant say for all auto elecs mate, but my reco's run for lot longer then 12 months, and comparing a engine to an alternator and delaying the inevitable is just stupid mate as they are 2 different things...
p.s the slip ring would be worn on a nipon denso alternator 100% and regs arent the problem...never are...
