Default thermostats - in particular for a 7mgte

havent looked into cross breeding of toyota parts but can some1 tell me if u can buy a genuine toyota thermostat rated at a temp around 80 degrees that will fit a 7mgte?

factory 7m ones are 90 degrees which makes my car sit at 92 degrees non stop.

i would ideally like alittle bit of headroom as motor is dragged, drifted and daily driven

im chasing a genuine toyota one as i currenctly have a generic one and although i havent had this problems in the past - as of late - the aftermarket water temp guage heats upto 100 then cools back down to 70 (guessign when thermostat opens) then heats back up to 100 (assuming lazy thermostat).......continuously when driving.

    cheers

well, i had a problem similar to you in my 5m, but it was running too cold, and temps would go from 50-70 all days long, depending on how i drove, i thought it was running no thermostat, went and bought a genuine 7m thermostat ($33, wat a rip) and it is 88 degrees, i took of my thermostat cover to find it did have one, but the seals where gone, causing water to pretty much bypass the entire thing, the other 5mge had a WAX-STAT 48degree thermostat that was also fubared! my motor did its hg once i changed it to the brand new one, if you want i could give the the original one, it'll run alot cooler

to answer your Q i dont know about cross-breeding, but if you go to Toyota, theyll ask for a VIN number for no fu$in reason!! so i say take the thermostat in with you and ask for something with a lower temp!!

hope that helps, chances are it wont do.

Remove the jiggle valve, ensuring its placed at the top, & use the 90 degree one.

82 degree is too cold, 86 should be the lowest.

Benefit of removing the jiggle valve: ----> air bleeds out of the system faster and it prevents a pressure built-up behind the stat that can keep it from opening at the spec temperature.

Your engine will run rich longer, wont produce as much power & will wear quicker.

what do you mean 'remove the jiggle valve'?

    make the hole bigger?

Sorry I can't advise on which thermostat to use - but I have noticed that some of the generic triton thermostats don't have a jiggle valve like the toyota ones do. I bought one for my St184 and returned it when I saw this. The OEM one was the same price as well.

I doubt that is the case

Standard 1UZ-FE thermo is 82degrees, the TRD version is 71degrees

yeh ok its a different engine but im pretty sure Toyota wouldnt sell thermos runnig at temps that cause engine issues like you mention

Also, in spite of the slightly richer mixture, the timing is advanced with lower water temps so you dont make less power, in fact you may make slightly more
