From the looks of things, it would seem that the W50's changes were more to do with further R&D enabling lower production costs (the throwout fork went from a solid cast iron item that pretty well never wore out to a folded metal item which wears over time), and the R&D's results were just transferred to the W5x to prevent having to re-tool anything that didn't need re-tooling.
I would guess it's all cost driven.
