It sounds like the late RA40 stuff is halfway between the old W50 and the W5x range.
Some things had migrated to the new design.

From the looks of things, it would seem that the W50's changes were more to do with further R&D enabling lower production costs (the throwout fork went from a solid cast iron item that pretty well never wore out to a folded metal item which wears over time), and the R&D's results were just transferred to the W5x to prevent having to re-tool anything that didn't need re-tooling.

I would guess it's all cost driven.

Heres a picture of the older style fork, pretty tuff and as stated pretty much indestructible prone to dirt and crud though.

W57 fork, pretty much the same as the RA40 I reckon, pressed steel, can bend I reckon.

W57 ra65 position selector. Now i'm thinking that if I want to change over to the more rearward selector position then I have to split the back of the gearbox, anybody got any experience in this area?

Yes, split the case and undo that bolt you see that.
Slide the whole thing off and replace that selector with an MA70 one.
Then be very careful putting it back together as its easy to knock it into a gear or two.
Once you think you have it right, try and select all 5 gears and reverse.
Once you verify that all the gears work, bolt everything back together.

So bascially take out the bolts from the sandwich plate and it will all slide up if the box is bellhousing down, is there anything that can fall out of the box or get misplaced when this happens? Should it be in neutral when your doing this?

Yeah, take out the 11 bolts that are in the sandwich plate, and the 6 that hold the positioner on, and the 1 small one that holds the selector to the rod.
Then (with some force) the rear of the box will 'slide' off.

Best to start in neutral, but it really doesn't matter. You'll see what the selector rod engages with when you get the back of the box off. When all 3 line up, thats neutral. But its common and easy to knock one of these into gear when you put it all back together.

Seems to be some crud in the box so splitting it for cleaning is probly a good idea.
