I'm biased....i use Mobil 1..and highly recommend it. however...i too have no scientific back-up. i can only merely recomending having used it since rebuilding the engine, putting it through track-days and have had no problems with it what so ever

Like everything, i think it has its good and its bads. The tolerances in Porsches and lambo's are probly suited to the thin oil.

However, we have used Mobil 1 extensively in 1600hp-1800hp blown engines and found it adeqaute. We however had to build the engine with suitable clearances to cope for how thin it is.

Although we have now found a better and more reliable option, that isnt to say its crap.

This has no relivance what soever. But top fuels run 70 weight oil! man that must mean that oil should be thick!!!

at correct operating temp, all 50weight oils will have the same viscosity (ish) since that is the definiteion of the oil's nomenclature.

mobil 1 seems thin because it doesn't change viscosity as much as other oils, being thinner at lower temp (but still thinner at operating temp)

for many people, what happens when the oil gets over the proper temperature is more important.

Temperature isnt really a problem as all these engines are running pure alcohol.

Also if anyone wants to see what happens to semi synthetic engine oil in a turbo engine @ 150,000kms after it's been run for 5000kms you can see my latest wear check report here:
    http://rapidshare.de/files/33766121/...ngine.pdf.html

Compare this to the datasheet for the oil:
    http://www.gulfwestern.com.au/pdfs/D...a%2015W-50.pdf

Take special note of the viscosity.

Also re this hydrocracked BS you'll find that most synthetic oils are not hydrocracked just a few of them.
E.g. Gulf Westerns Gulf 1 and Sougi 6000 Synthetic oils are both made from fully synthetic PAO's.

From what I remember it was Mobil and Castrol who were the kings of hydrocracked oil... probably why Mobil 1 isn't such a great oil.

Also synthetic oils generally have more to them than just the increased resistance to breakdown... these are an oil companies top of the line product and generally have the best additive packs.

Again with this thing against Mobil 1

Toobs, you thought wrong, Mobil 1 is a PAO type fully synthetic

this is an old link..but worthwhile for a very thorough look at mobil 1

oh..and i'm not sure if any of you guys follow Mobil 1 journeys....i dont...but they do advertise them....Maloo ute (fastest ute in the world!!) around australia without oil/filter change
same with a group of 4x4 drivers who cross Outback without oil/filter change

I switched to Penrite Syn15 from Penrite HPR15 and noticed an improvement, less engine noise when starting and running and the engine felt smoother.

and speaking of oils and slightly OT. on the weekend my sister went to a school fundraising auction. she bided on and won a $250 car serves. she just got a phone call from mechanic and has to pay an extra $50 because in the service they include 3 liters of oil and they had to put in 5l. WTF?? $50 for 2 extra liters of oil and what car only holds 3L?? haha feel like going down there with her and going WTF.
i did tell her though to expect a bill for 50-100, cause their gypsey bastards and cant give anything for nothing.

I never said it was made from Hydrocracked oil.
I just said it was mobil and castrol that started all this hydrocracking crap and that it could be a reason why everyone says mobil 1 is crap.

Also thanks for the link but you have to remember that oils marketed in Australia vs oils of the same branding sold in the USA are often completely different products.
e.g. Penzoil in USA vs Penzoil in AU... in the US they are very high grade oils, in AU it's rubbish for the most part.

From Mobil Australia's website I note that Mobil make no claim that basestock is 100% PAO's...
Is Mobil 1 a fully synthetic oil?

Yes, it is. To meet the demanding requirements of today's specifications (and our customers' expectations), Mobil 1 uses high performance synthetic fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAO), along with a proprietary system of additives. In fact, each Mobil 1 viscosity grade uses a specific combination of a synthetic fluids and selected additives in order to tailor the viscosity grade to its unique requirements.
Looks a bit sus to me... perhaps it may contain traces of peanuts too.

As for my cars they just get the cheap 20/50 shell brand.

All this theory crap really doesnt prove much to me.

Having personally tried and experimented with it proves something tho.

We can all shout theories but really what it comes down to is practical experience.

EDIT: id like to add, we are still using mineral oil and very succeusfully.

My brother got this new Castrol Edge Sport 15w40 for his 2L turbo Sigma, cost him about $50. It makes 140hp at the wheels and is still running sane boost levels (11psi)

Was it worth it? And on the back of the container it says "Increased fuel efficiency"

I've always believed that change the oil more often is better than buying something more expensive.
