    Default W58 vs.T50 tranny

I just came across a W58 tranny from an '82 cressida,I'm wondering if it has distinct advantages over a T50 tranny. Any information will be highly appreciated.

They are bigger physically than the T50 and far less likely to break. Basically the T50 is happy behind a small 4 cyl motor, but will die very quickly when you start talking about turbocharging or adding any decent capacity. The W58 will happily run behind a strong V8 or heavily turbocharged 4cyl. Also the W58 has an overdrive 5th, so your rpm at 100kph will be quite low.

Converting from a T50 to a W58 is a big job, but worthwhile if you are going to be producing any large amount of power.

    Hi,

The T50 has overdrive in 5th also.

You need to look at the ratios of the boxes to determine the gearing, and I'm sure some learned person here has these figures.

Are you sure its a W58 in the 82 Cressida?
From factory they only had the W50, but it could have been swapped.

just be sure you can get a bellhousing for the engine you are putting the W58 onto as the bellhousing on the T50 will not bolt up to the W58

also take into account trans tunnel room and tailshaft length

W55,7,8 all will bolt up to a T series engine using a G series bellhousing. The 5th on the W58 is much longer than the 5th on a T50 (or W50, W55/57) so is even more of an overdrive... sorry should have been clearer with what I said.

Tailshaft in most cars which came with a T50 can be substituted with that of the automatic version, provided they used the A30 or A40. Tunnel room in a TA22 is from memory good, other cars I cannot comment on. 82 Corona may well have come with the W55, as did the 82 Celica. Check carefully before jumping to conclusions. Still a large step up from the T50, just as strong as a W58, but doesn't have the really long overdriven 5th.

I have already used a W50 tranny on my 2t engine before but I had to go back to my T50 because the W50 tranny became defective. The W50 tranny fit ino my 2t using the right bellhousing,I am planning to try on the W58 and see what will happen. I'll be keeping my T50 in case it does not produce good results.

    1982 Should be xX6x Cressida... (i.e GX61, MX62)

W58 would / should be correct for 1982 Cressida
