can always rub the paint back with 2500 aswell. happily takes the gloss away. :S

the paint was super thin straight out of the tin, so gun metal didnt thin it out at all, just sprayed it straight on. coming close to a week now and the paint is still shiny as, it is very cold here atm but surely it would have set by now?? in any case, im getting used to the look now, and it's definately an improvement over what it was before

no doubt its been covered in this thread allready... but how long do you leave acrylic paint before you can wetsand/buff it?

Oven baked acrylic can be wet sanded within hours. Home spray job, give it a couple of days, and if you can, park it in the sun for at least a few hours. The UV light helps the paint to cure.

This is for final coat, for intermediate coat sanding just follow the directions on the can, but on average for a double header coat I would allow 2 -3 hours before attacking with wet sanding.

i had 4 1000w spotties on the car to cook the paint when i did it, so ill get into polishing in the next few days and hopefully all will be sweet.

Rds my method for polishing a newly painted car, is as follows:

Check in an inconspicous spot, like behind a bumper bar, and make sure that what you are sanding has properly cured. If you get little balls of paint STOP and let the paint cure some more.

Spot denib with 1500 wet and dry, thats to get out bugs and dust specs,

Do entire car with 2000 wet and dry, only work any area of about 300mm x300mm at any one time.

Do entire car with 3000 wet and dry, same as above

Buff with mahine and compound "3G" works well,

Change to fine pad and buff entire car with swirl remover,

Wash car to remove all traces of compound,

Apply sealer and glaze, hand buff off with microfibre cloth's, and

Apply your choice of wax, and buff off with microfibre cloth's.

Stand back and admire your 2-3 days of bloody hard work.

You will need a 2 sheets of 1500, 10 sheets of 2000, and half a dozen sheets of 3000. I use a small block of wood a little larger than a match box to wrap the paper around. For curved areas I use a piece of "Boogie Board" about 100mmx50mmx50mm. A wooden block on edges will almost certainly end up in heartbreak. Grab a spray bottle and fill with a mixture of water and sugar soap. You will probably have to refill this at least a dozen times. You also need a bucket of water and sugar soap, and a good clean soft cloth ( I steal the best softest teatowel I can find.) You use the cloth to wipe off the sanding sludge. A soft rubber squeegie is used to push the water away from the area you have just worked, so you can assess the smoothness of the paintwork.

You must continually check the rubbing surface of the sandpaper and if little spots of paint build up, grab a new piece of paper, as those spots WILL scratch the paint.

Before using any of the Wet and Dry soak it in water with sugar soap added, for at least 20minutes, otherwise the edges of the paper WILL scratch the paint.

a question,

when sanding the primer, and with a guide coat (matt black) on top, the black seems to clog up the paper, and then procede to scratch the primer.

How do i stop this?

Am i using too thick a guide coat?

use a acrylic guide coat and wet rub and yes a thin guide coat is sufficient. when you rub down dry with fine paper it will always clog and you will use three times the paper

With the guide coat, I've found some brands are better than others, some just clog the paper. Make sure you let it dry really well and don't use much. A really light dusting is all you need.

That is your problem right there, use acrylic, matt black, unless of course your whole paint sytem (primer/topcoat) is enamel.

As has been said a very very light dust coat is all you need for a guide coat. Hold the gun about two and a half feet from the job and just let the guide coat "dust" onto the primer.

Ahhh! It was my guide coat all along!


I gave up my last attempt of a respray after i got the shits with the sand paper continuously clogging.

I bought myself a acrylic can of matt black, and we'll see how we go from there.

It's all I have ever used and never had a problem. It barely sticks when it's used properly so as a dust coat it is perfect.
