Being acrylic, you can sand that back tomorrow. Yeah with what you have done, a nice wet rub with 800, then a 1:2 coat followed by the 10-20% coat as mentioned above. Should come out the business. Just watch your air pressure, in painting more is not always better. Depending on gun type, and hose length you should be somewhere beteween 35- 45psi. I run that with 9 metres of hose, and a gravity gun, but the air pressure is also trimmed at the gun. You are looking for good atomisation of the fluid, without excessive mist, to avoid dry spray.

    cheers Chuck.

I've been priming the '28 of late. Boy was there some elbow grease required, and the body is actually one of the better condition ones!! Doesn't help that there have been some 'professional' repairs done previously, like a respray involving everything except the roof which required lots of sanding to remove the crows feet!! Might have to start taking stock of my sand paper and think about going for some more. I just have the rust repairs on the rear section to go and I am right to finish priming.

In the engine bay, around the windscreens, around the hatch opening and inside where water can collect, I have been using POR 15 as an under base. Got the first coat in the bay this arvo - and I must say that goggles are a great idea when spraying that stuff. The mist gets in your eyes and stings.

So I now have 3 spray guns with definite purposes.
    1. Really old $40 superthief suction gun to spray POR15
    2. $80 Workquip with 1.4 and 1.8 nozzles for etch and high build primers
    3. $300 Transtar with 1.3 nozzle for colour and clear

Unfortunatley I haven't had a chance to crack out the Transtar yet. Am keen to give it a run.

    Hey Chris,

I had a similar type of situation when I put my clear on, I used 1500 with soapy water, every now and then wiping it clear and checking the surface from all sides then sanding again. Then used K+H Buff N Shine, and finished off with a fine Polish, turned out great. It turned out fine for me because I put heaps of clear on, so even after sanding lots of clear off, I still had a good amount left on the panel.

If you don't have enough clear on and you have to do lots of sanding to get it level you might get it down to the underlying colour (or close)
So as chuck mentioned, you could rub it back, and then put clear on it back again (I think this is what I did actually it was a while ago)
    And it turned out great.

If you use stripper, mask up with some aluminium tape. You could try the Josco "plastic" wheels on the drill. The wheels are plastic, impregnated with an abrasive.

Im no expert but I have always done it with the panels off, guess it depends on the space you have to spray it in but I like the ease and better gun control of being able to lean over panels on a table. I think the man rule is to do the car evenly,so if you do the panels make sure you do the shell with the same run of paint.

Thus thread needs more pics too! Lets see some of the results guys.

    Pics as requested.
These are as of about a week ago.

As for painting the panels, I have been convinced that the best thing to do is paint the panels on the vehicle, with the cavities created by the windows etc covered. Closing up the cavity is said to prevent circulation of the paint dust in the air causing overspray.

If you are painting a flat colour, it is probably not as important to paint with the panels on, however with a metallic or other paint which has some form of effect, then it is more important to get the layering the same.

Top work man, looking straight as Yeah I shuld have mentioned that if you have a metallic that having all the panels on would be the best idea.

    cheers

I normally paint the engine bay, door jambs, inside of doors, boot opening, underside of bootlid and bonnet, then rehang all panels and then colour coat the rest. This however makes laying on a clear coat a real bitch, opening doors etc. The most impoertant thing is to have all panels in their correct orientation whether they are on or off the car. This is ultra important with metalic and pearl paints. Off the car does require a heap more space though.

    cheers Chuck.

Thanks for the comments.Yes it is only a base colour(Monza Red). The thing that I was worried about was if doing things off the car the shade of colour may be different on the main shell but it looks that it wont really matter.
    Cheers Brett.

oldcorollas, I first bought paint from these guys, when they just started out, 15 years ago. If their course is as good as their customer service, it should be a goer. You can read all you like on the subject, but a bit of hands on experience is worth heaps. Costs nothing, so it has to be $ effective, would make a nice club event for the Sydney guys.

    cheers Chuck.
