that "50 buck paint job" turned alright..even after a year is still looked nice and glossy..if one was to do what that guy did, could you put a clear over the paint to protect it or would it be not worth the effort.
hi damo
it would not be worth the effort
as his paint job cost $50 ,and has lasted a year so far
the cost of clear coating it would be double that , so no point cos he can do the whole thing over again [ cheaper] when it loses its gloss

nostalgia is not what it used to be:
Man thats dodgy! Personally I wouldnt bother, but its cool that people are just trying things for themselves. If the car was never going to get a "professional" paint job like he says, then its worth it if it looks as good in real life as the photos IMO.
By the way, where's the dude that painted his 22 holden purple? Neverland i think? How did it turn out after clear coats?

Sorry to dig this up but i just want some clarification.
I have minimal paint experience, the only things i've done is prep spray and fit fibreglass panels to the old GTR with spray cans (came up ok-ish)
So i've gone and want to respray the new car. And i've read this thread head to tail but not quite sure what i've supposed to be doing.
Anyways:
With ding repairs on the body, do i have to sand it back to bare metal, fill it, and then primer over the top. Or can i scuff back the clear, repair the ding (be it filler) and then primer over the top?
Also with fibreglass prep, do i just scuff back the fibreglass, fix any imperfections with filler, then primer over the top and continue from there?

Dings should be tapped out with a hammer and dolley as much as possible. You only need to sand back to metal if the ding has penetrated the paint by means of scratching, and that has gone through every layer. You must sand back to the layer below the exposed one to ensure you are not painting over contaminated primer (primer is porous)
But yes, sand back, fill and prime. Use a coarse grade sandpaper wherever you are filling to give the filler something to stick to (if you are going to bare metal, I usually give the metal a few slashes with a butter knife to give the filler a solid patch to hold.
DO NOT wet sand filler or primer. Only topcoats can be wet sanded, and care must be taken to not penetrate through to the primer. DO NOT patch prime if your painting the whole car. Patches of primer will show through the colour.
As for fibreglass, well I am no expert on that, but I believe that apart from using fillers and primers suitable for fibreglass, the techniques are the same. Obviously a hammer and dolley are not desirable implements for repairing dings in fibreglass though.

The dings are in places i can't get to with a hammer, mainly around the lock area on the car. Otherwise i would have pushed them out by now. I'll give it another try but.
Other then that, its good to hear i don't have to take it right back to metal! That would shit me for a couple of the dings.

i wet sanded some sections of bog/filler and primer. didnt make a difference. still came out well. BUT i did put a shit load of paint and clear over the top.... i think i used 4-5 layers of clear(inc 2 really thick ones) and i think i used 5 layers of paint(inc 2 thick ones)

Apologies if it is already posted in this thread.
Andy... time will tell if the wet sanding will cause problems. Remember that primer is porous, as is filler, and as such the moisture trapped in there will make itself known in time by either swelling the paint in that area, or causing rust. Let us hope it is not the latter.
