Pretty cold here now tonight. Some of the bit and pieces like the rear spoiler, we painted near the end about 4:30pm. They seem to have a bit of white milky look to them in parts. Is this due to moisture getting into the clear? Will it go away after a good hit of sun tomorrow?

Also do you recommend putting everything back on the car like handles bars rear view mirrors etc, then cutting and buffing it at the same time?

glad it is finally over. I guess we will see how it turns out when we cut and buff. Won't be doing that untill next weekend.

the white milky look is called blooming and it will go away when you buff it it usually happens when its cold so no bigy
i normally leave it all apart until you buff it as its a lot easier to buff and get to all the edges when there are no handles and mirrors in the road and its also easier to clean the cutting compound off to(it doesnt get in all the grooves of the handles and moulds)
also the longer you leave it the harder it is to buff out the sanding marks from denibing it.
I normally buff it the next morning when its still a bit soft the give it final light buff and polish a week or 2 later, depending on how much sun light it gets.

Awesome thanks for that. Looks like I will try buff it tomorrow. I will put it in the sun tomorrow morning before work. I will get home about 3pm and buff it then. Just quickly what do you mean by denibing it?

any little bits of dirt or any runs in it, always use a block with about 1500 wet and you could always go back over it with 2000 to make it easier to buff.
what will you be buffin it with a lambs wool pad or a foam pad and what kind of cutting compound are you going to use?

lambs wool pad, cutting compound is ' Septone, Mr Buff cutting compound'
this blooming problem occurred on the last coat of clear, I guess the temp dropped to quickly. Can I just sand the last coat off with 400 wet then 800 wet and hit it with clear again during the middle of the day? Or will I need to hit it with colour again as well? almost all the smaller pieces of this blooming, if only we didn't do the last coat of clear . Front bar has a bit of it as well, rear view mirrors a bit and the rear spoiler.
What is this easiest way to fix it. Apparently with acrylic if it blooms its stuffed and won't dry out like 2pak.

Bonnet looks milky but it is just over spray. The car is fine now blooming it was warmer under the house. We painted the other bits and pieces outside.

And here is the blooming So annoying if only we had another hour of sun it would have been great.

if your going to re clear it dont sand it with 400 you will have to sand it with 1000 if any courser the crear wont fill the sanding scratches and you will have to recolour it as well.
sorry didnt ask but is it 2 pak or acrylic?
with acrylic it can be buffed out but only if its a light shade of bloom, if its really white then you will have to reclear it

    Hi,

Some updates on my C Pillar.

Tried that spot putty stuff and it sands back so quickly, it's too weak/soft. But ended up being able to get some of it into the little gaps, but then the hifill primer filled them up more.

Now I'm wondering, If the hifill is allready quite tacky, does it have to be sanded back?
Says to "Sand with fine sandpaper", Ideally what grit should I use, 800?

you could always try to give a spot a quick sand with 1200 and a quick buff to see if it comes up and if it doesnt i would rub it back with 1500 and put 2 more coat of clear on it mixed 50/50 its called flow coating and you get a better finish anyway.

Z2TT if the hi fill is still tacky you wont be able to sand it, i wouldnt paint over anything courser then 600

Ah thats brilliant hearing those words from you chuck. Thats the only idea I came up with as well. As the car had been in the sun and the hatch was warmer to touch than the bumper.

What can I do to counter this? I'm already thinning my paint more than I used to. In the past I did 1 part paint 1.5 parts thinners, but this last batch of PPG paint seems thicker or something and I am going 1:2.

Should I thin it even further or is there an adjustment I need to make with my technique? Painting in the shade is difficult as its either almost dark (garage) or fully exposed (driveway), so i choose the latter.

when buffing acrylic make sure you dont get the paint to hot, cause if the paint gets hot it will re melt and will be very easy to "burn" the paint
