Megz, 2pak primer would be ideal, however normal primer is so "neutral" that it can be used in lieu of the 2pak if you do not have the facilities for 2pak.

    cheers Chuck.

Cuzzo, this is a guard I did for "The Fastest Fridge in the Galaxy"

This guard was soda blasted, and sand blasted in the really rusty areas.

    Rust treated.

    Primed and guide coated.

Sanded back the guide coat, and found these problem areas.

    another hint for storing paints
when storing, use a permanent marker pen and write your color code and name on the bottom of the can as well as the lid
eg red orange code 357 ,
when storing paints or primers for an extended period , with a secured lid rotate the tin every few weeks this also works well for fillers .
i store some of my paint in an old fridge , that way it is not as effected with temperature fluctuations ,
i have some still usable paint i have had for 5 years
nostalgia is not what it used to be:

What did you then do with those areas? Spray putty or just some nikki?

Well after spending the whole day at work (thankfully the boss is away and the pages i am reading looks like research I have to do) reading through this thread and learnt a lot, I am definitely keen to tackle the spray painting duties of my ke25 when the time comes.

I signed up for VG's spray painting demo (V.G Autopaints & Tools (Girraween,NSW)), which is on the 27th of this month, hopefully seeing it with my own eyes will give me a good idea on prep work and spraying techniques.

Stu - Have you completed any more painting of the old rolla?

Cuz - How is your spray coming along?

    Cheers

    Mick

the VG thing is good, not so much because they give you lots of information (they don't really), but more because you can see just how easy it can be.. and they do make it look easy.

oh.. can you ask them if they rent out their spray booth for me?

i'm up to filling and smoothing the bonnet, guards and bootlid, then colour their edges and then need to rub back for final colour.
I want to find a booth to do it in, so it's cleaner and no-one complains, but i haven't looked around much yet. (some place near wetherill park and bargo??, and this one at revesby Professional Spray-painting, Wheel/Rim repair & Spraybooth Hire - Sydney Region business services - Gumtree Sydney Region Free Classifieds )

I need to get out there before rain this weekend.. and get something done

stu - i used to work at vg`s about 8 yrs ago now and i went there about 2yrs ago and painted my wagon- my avatar- in their booth, 3rd car ive done and they were saying then that they werent hiring it out any more(they used to all the time) but that beening said they may have changed their attitude now as they could and were making a good sum with people like me and little panel shops in the area hiring it out when thier own booths were flat out..
back then they charged me about $120 for the saturday ,in by 8 out by about 1230, so have all the tape pre masked load the car in the booth throw what masking paper you need down and bam away you go.. and i think they were charging extra for masking paper, tape etc....
if he is still there the best bloke to speak to would be mark but he may be gone last time i was there was 2 yrs ago....

Yeah, that's what I am hoping for. Although all this reading is very informative (and thank you for all the expert input from a few members!), I think I would benefit a lot from seeing it done in person and having a chance to talk to someone about it.

Spray booth would be good, i think the biggest problem that I will face is the lack of room for spraying - apartment complexes don't offer that much room in a single garage and a few people may complain about the fumes :/. But spraying will be a while off, rust repairs are the biggest issue at the moment.

    Cheers

Finally laid down the primer on the bay and cowel panel.

Im finding small debris getting attracted to the paint (like stuff in the air).... how do i go about earthing the car to stop? this from happening.

cuzzo, before you put the primer down did you wipe it with a anti-static tak rag? there a small either blue or orange cloth thats really sticky... you can try and earth the chassis out on the ground somehow, i used to earth it to the steel grates in the floor of the spray booth with a jumper cable or the another simple soultion would be drop the actual pressure from the spray gun so that the air movement in where you painting is minmised,

but as it is happening with the primer i wouldnt worry too much as 99 percent od the crap thats in there will get rubbed back anyways.. are you going to be painting the colour in there or in a booth????

    cheers chris

Cuzzo, as well as earthing to minimise static, tack ragging, dropping the air pressure, you should also mop the floor, or spay a mist of water onto the floor. Just enough moisture to lay the dust. Huge puddles of water are not what you want.

If your surrounds are clean then the job will be clean.

I go to the extent of hosing the driveway outside the "paint booth" as well.

    cheers Chuck.

    Cheers guys.

I'll be doing the bay in here, but that's it. No tack rag was used. I'll pick one up before colour and see what happens.

mopping the floor to get it wet, or to get it clean?

ive read/heard painting with the floor wet is a bad idea as it drags shit off the ground, with all the rising humidity etc?
